Default clean install but explorer causes invalid page fault

I just did a very clean install of win98. It worked fine for half a day but
now I get an explorer error
message very quickly on the boot which says illegal operation with details
"Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe
@015f:00401f31" The Toshiba laptop 2655x will not boot any further and
shuts down.

HELP!!!!!!! I have no idea what I did wrong. I thought the install went
perfectly. I have installed many OSs.

Thanks,
Jenny

Default clean install but explorer causes invalid page fault

I have continued to hunt for answer and it appears that this message appears
if explorer is
installed in the root directory. Since I did a clean install, I don't know
how that happened,
but friend is bringing the laptop by at noon and I will try renaming
explorer.exe to see if that
fixes the problem.

I will let group know.
Thanks,
Jenny

Better run a virus scan, if one was found in the root directory. Also, I
have found this...

Thanks PCR, but that link doesn't work. As it turns out, I just got the
laptop back today and explorer.exe isn't in C:. So that is not the problem.
I'm still searching for the cause.
Thanks,

Default clean install but explorer causes invalid page fault

| Thanks PCR, but that link doesn't work.

You extracted a new copy of "Ole32.dll", per that article, & the problem
didn't go away? Well...

(1) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"
It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E
are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is
indicated.

(2) Over-install IE. Try first without, but I believe it will request an
internet connection. Perhaps it is best to let it connect, actually. If
you don't care to get this fancy, just skip to step (c).

(a) Turn off interfering programs. Use http://www.pcmag.com/ 's
"StartupCop" or "EndItAll2". Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Note what is unchecked, if anything. Then, go to the General tab &
disable the entire Startup Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking
"Load Startup...". Reboot.

(b) Perhaps, if you haven't got EndItAll2, then "Ctrl-Alt-Del" & end
task all but Explorer & Systray. If this goes badly, start again from
top, & skip it next time.

(c) "START, Find, F/F, IE6Setup.exe". Click it in the Find window.
NOTE: If you are IE5, then it's "IE5Setup.exe". If there are more
than one (I have two each), click the one in "C:\WINDOWS\Windows
Update Setup Files" or "C:\Windows Update Setup Files", as applicable.

(d) Re-enable the Startup Group. That will automatically check all
items. Go to the Startup tab & uncheck any noted in step (a). Reboot.

(e) Perhaps go to Windows Update, to see whether it now offers
criticals.

Default clean install but explorer causes invalid page fault

Well, perhaps try it that way in Safe Mode, as the machine will not boot
to Normal Mode. Or...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];249191
Blank Desktop or Illegal Operations Error Message After You Install
Internet Explorer (This one temporarily reverts to an earlier version of
IE, IF you have that option. I have a detailed write-up, if you want
it.)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293174
Error Message: Explorer Caused an Invalid Page Fault in Module
Browseui.dll (This one is an over-install of your current IE.)

(1) Hold CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu. Select to
boot to the "Command Prompt Only" (DOS).

(2) At DOS...

(a) Enter "EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini"
(b) In the [Boot] section, change "Shell=Explorer.exe" to
"Shell=Progman.exe"
(c) Alt-F-X-ENTER (pressed separately) to exit Edit. (TAB to get to
buttons. ENTER to accept a button.)
(d) Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows running Progman.

(3) In Progman, over-install IE, which basically is E. (I only hope it
doesn't ask for an internet connection. Perhaps, select "Custom" & only
check the items that have a bold checkbox, to avoid it will want the
internet. OTOH, it might be better to let it connect, if your DUN
allows.)

If you are IE6, "ie6setup.exe" will be in "C:\Windows\Windows Update
Setup Files". (You may also use the copy in "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer", which is "C:\Progra~1\Intern~1" to DOS.)

(a) In Progman, "File menu, Run, Browse button".
Folders pane will be open at "C:\Windows" with sub-folders below
it. Otherwise, make it so.
(b) Scroll down the Folders pane & D-Clk "window~1".
Now the left (File Name) pane should show "ie6setup.exe"
(c) D-CLK "IE6Setup.exe" to run it.
(d) Skip to step (4).

If you are IE5, "ie5setup.exe" will be in "C:\Windows Update Setup
Files". (You may also use the copy in "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer", which is "C:\Progra~1\Intern~1" to DOS.) I do not suppose you
should run "ie5setup.exe", if you have installed IE6. This one would be
only for those who never did install IE6.

(a) File menu, Run, Browse button.
Folders pane will be open at "C:\Windows" with sub-folders below
it.
(b) D-Clk "C:\" in the Folders pane to go up one level.
(c) Scroll down the Folders pane & D-Clk "window~1".
(d) "ie5setup.exe" now appears in the left (File Name) pane.
(e) D-CLK "IE5Setup.exe" to run it.

(4) Reboot back to DOS. Then...

(a) Enter "EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini"
(b) In the [Boot] section, change back to "Shell=Explorer.exe"
(c) Alt-F-X-ENTER to EXIT. (TAB to get to buttons. ENTER to accept a
button.)
(d) Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows.

Default Explorer.exe

Do you have an Explorer.exe in C:\, the root directory? Better run a DOS-based virus scan, if one is found in the root directory. To see...

Boot to Command Prompt Only, by holding CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu. Or, try that Startup Diskette, again, or get a new one from...
http://www.bootdisk.com/
Take either one that applies to your system. Then...

DIR C:\Explorer.exe /a /s

Thus...
C:\DIR C:\Explorer.exe /a /s
Directory of C:\WINDOWS
EXPLORER EXE 180,224 04-23-99 10:22p EXPLORER.EXE
1 file(s) 180,224 bytes

BETTER have JUST one, & in THAT folder!

Also, I have found this...

That's correct. C:\explorer.exe is a good indicatior odf a virus infection !

Example:
W32/CodeRed.c.worm -- http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99177.htm

The following tool can be used to determine and clean a infected PC.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

* * * Please report back your results * * *
