Default desktop icons

Recently my desktop icons (the ones that only are linked to the
internet) do not work, with the exception of the Internet Explorer
icon. If I click on the IE icon first, minimize that then click on
i.e. a weater site or banking site icon, it works; just not
independently.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Thank you!

see if this works for you....

Without warning and totally unexpectedly, Windows icons may become corrupt
and a generic icon will take the place of the original. Windows has supplied
a way to repair these corrupted icons. See below for details:

Windows 98 stores the information for your desktop icons in a special file
called "ShelliconCache." This means that the operating system keeps all the
data for all the icons on the desktop in a single file for faster display
than if the system would have to search for all the original icon files.
ShelliconCache is a hidden file in the C:\Windows folder. To rebuild your
icons, you have to delete your ShelliConCache file. Here's how you repair
the damage.

Unhiding The ShelliconCache File
1 - Open any Windows Explorer Folder view window
2 - Select "Folder Options" from the View menu
3 - Click the View tab
4 - Expand the File And Folders branch of the display
5 - In the Hidden Files branch, check the "Show All Files" option.
6 - Save your changes.

Deleting The ShelliconCache File
1 - Click Start/Shutdown
2 - Choose "Restart In MS-DOS mode"
3 - At the command prompt type; del ShelliconCache and press enter
4 - Restart your computer.

At reboot, Windows will rebuild all icon files back to their original state.

Sounds like IE is being used to connect to the Internet. Maybe check
your IE settings.

Can you do other things on the Internet without using IE before you
load IE? Like Newsgroups or E-mail.

Hi Haggis,

Actually the ShelliconCache file can be deleted with Explorer. Then
Start Shutdown Restart to re-build it. Using Restart to Dos Mode
requires EXIT to get back to Windows. Otherwise, depending on the
Advanced properties in the Exit To Dos shortcut the system may be
locked in Dos. This is because the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files
may be re-named and substituted with others for the session. EXIT
restores the original two files.

If this is truly a ShellIconCache issue, OP should also get the appropriate
reg hack from Aumha.org and install it. Actually, *anyone* using Win98/98SE
should install this fix.

Look in...

Start
Settings
Folder options
File types tab

Scroll down the list of file types to "Internet shortcut" and click
it. In the "File type" details area it should say that it opens with
IE.

Click the "Edit" button. That will give you a new applet. In that
applet, click the action "open" then click "Edit..."

You now have a third applet. IE isn't my default browser so I can't
tell you what should be in the window for "Application used to perform
action:" but this will work...
"rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l"
If, in the "Application used to perform action:" window you have a
path to IE, check that path; if not, copy and paste what is there to a
text file (so you can get it back if necessary) and copy/paste the
above to the window. OK your way out of window #3. In window #2, set
"open" as default and OK your way out.

That's right. That is there w/o the quotes...
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
...., with "Use DDE" unchecked.

The "print" Application box contains...
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSHTML.DLL,PrintHTML "%1"
....with "Use DDE" checked, but all the boxes are empty.

And the "printto" Application box is...
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSHTML.DLL,PrintHTML "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"
....with "Use DDE" unchecked.

That isn't mormal. It SHOULD be the rundll32.exe line you posted above
that is there.

I would do that, & eventually delete the one that was copied.

Yea. Select it, & click the "Set Default" button. "Open" should turn
darker. Also, check "Enable Quick View" & "Confirm open after download"
on that screen.
