To continue...

It's a PCChips M571 socket 7 mobo (yes I know it's ancient but it's served
me well for many years!), other PCI cards apart form the Belkin which
currently is in slot 1, is a NVidia GeForce MX400 in slot 2 and a Rockwell

card.

Hope this helps. Many thanks for your time.

Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

Hi Gary,

Thanks for helping me out on this one. It's a F5D7000ec. Now I did raise
this issue of being an "ec" with Belkin because they always quote "uk" and I
wondered if this was significant being in the UK as I am, but apparently not.

As mentioned above to MEB, apart from the Belkin card, I do have a Rockwell
telephone modem which I use for faxing and an NVidia graphics card, which
completes my 3x PCI line-up.

Hope it helps. All the best,

Sandy

It does, gives a chance to check the specs out. Several versions of the
board [as well as several *manufacturers*]
On board video and sound, no on board network.
No need to explain about the age, I also have several dinosaurs here, in
fact I'm using a 440BX .board for this.
The information I find suggest there were more slots, hmm. Franc Zabkar did
some extensive technical work concerning the board. Off subject anyway.

As to the problem, it happens to be quite common with several net adapters

Some have found that by merely connecting the net card to a network [or
modem/router], caused the install to mysteriously work..Others found that
changing the card [same] would then allow installation [like a bad card, and
yes there a new defectives].

I would ask if you went into SAFE MODE and made sure that there were no
ghost entries from previous attempts?

Sometimes its found that going into Control Panel NETWORK and removing
all entries [and of course re-setting it up after a shut down] would then
allow the installation.

Wait and see what Gary comes up with though before you delete the Network

(I've read your other stuff.) Well, I gotta admit that my favorite fix for
all things network is to wipe the devices (NICs, Modem, everything in
Network applet), also from the Device Manager, and start over. But you might
want to stick with MEB for a while before getting so drastic.

Of course, the other option is to try a different NIC.

Default CAN'T INSTALL BELKIN NIC DRIVERS

Morning MEB (it is for me!),

Thanks for your reply... lots of stuff for me to get my head round!

The only INF files I removed were the folders listed as Belkin & Broadcom,
no others.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N100393.asp - was the technique you
used similar to this?

Just printed this off - useful stuff here, thanks. Yes sort off in my
fumbling way trying to muddle through. There are some extra steps I can try
but what is really useful is I can follow through in a logical sequence.
However, looking at the points between steps 15 & 16 ( I was having another
go last night whilst waiting for this post), I noticed the card was not
identified. However, I will go through Netgears' sequence now I've got it &
see what happens.

Just been looking through the other links you suggested... perhaps I should
be grateful I've got a Belkin & not a Linksys! General theme seems to be
change the card. Hmmm. Not convinced - yet.

Yes, on your other point I did go into Safe Mode to remove the 'device'
because you're right, previous experience on this ghosting anomaly can be
quite revealing, all taking up valuable resources.

Finally, like I said when playing last night, I did remove all network
protocols, clients et al. I must admit I can't remember if I closed down
before re-installing them or not. Can a card's drivers be loaded before the
Network elements are put in or does the network clients/protocols have to be
in place first?

Right! I better speak to the other guys now. Thanks for your help MEB.

Cheers,

Sandy.
