Default Age of Empires II multiplayer problem on Windows 98

I am running Age of Empires II on one computer with Windows XP and the other
with Windows 98. Both computers are connected to a local network (LAN) and
the network is up. I've added a protocol IPX/SPX to the Windows 98 machine
network. I started a multiplayer game on the XP under the LAN connection.
The 98 machine can see that there is a game, but it doesn't allow it to
connect to it. It returns a message saying "unable to join." I can't figure
out what to do. I've installed the last version of Direct X and the latest
update for the game on both computers. I also have another 98 machine and
I've been able to connect using that machine and play a multiplayer game, so
I know the problem is with the other 98 machine. Can anyone help me?

There are likely other forums which could provide more exacting help,
microsoft.public.ageofempires
but perhaps this group can try.

1. Are there any firewalls on any of the computers, if so, which
firewall(s)?

2. What ports are configured in those firewalls [if applicable] for the
game?

3. Have you made sure that you are using/have configured the proper address
and port IN the game networking configuration or command line [IIRC, the
command line option was possible, but I may be wrong]?

4. Are you attempting to use the same CDROM for all connected computers, if
so how many at one time?

5. Are all computer's networking configured the same, e.g., same Clients,
same protocols, same IP configurations, etc.?

6. Are you running this through a router?

7. If I read your original present right, you have run the XP computer in a
multiplayer game, is the XP being used as the server?

8. And to negate potential issues, what Anti-virus programs do you have on
the problem computer verses the computers that work together?
