i have tested the cable and i just moved the computer into my room at work
were i do the computer stuff and it worked fine so i know it is not the
computer . The cable is plugged into a little 6 port switch and that is
hooked up to a 48 port cisco switch. I have replaced the 6 port switch still
the same thing . It is hard to tell what other computers are hooked up to it
but i am going to trace the wire down and see what other computers are
hooked up to it and see if they have the same problem. I am not forsure if
they will have a problem but yet i do not know why they would not have the
same problem since those computers are hooked up to the same 6 port switch.
Because those computers have a client program that connects to the server and
if there is any problems with the connection the computer comes up with a
message and i have not seen anything like that. But i will trace down the wire
and find out

yes i have downloaded the drivers it is set dhcp. I have installed windows
2000 and when i booted up the computer i still got a 169.254 number i
restarted the computer and i got and ip address from dhcp but it still has
the same problem with pinging "communication problem". So since i have
this
communication problem i am having problems joining to the domain or
doing
anything that has to do with the network

My windows 98 computer i just formated will not get any ip address
dynamically from our server. When i get logged onto the computer
locally i
try doing a renew of the ip address and it only gives me the
169.254.*.*
number. So i do it statically and i can ping but the loss is between
50%-75%
. I have replaced the network card i have plugged the computer into a
different port on the switch and that did not help. All the other
computers
on that switch ping fine so i know its not the switch. So i am going to
try
to install windows 2k see if that will help.Does anyone have anything
for
me
to try because i dont thing that installing windows 2k will help.

before you go that road ....did you reinstall the correct drivers for the
nic ? (since you just formatted the default drivers for your nic may not
be
the correct ones)

and of course DHCP is enabled on that machine....

did you try a new cable? is your gateway set on that computer?
