scan disk and defragmenter
it seems that (for some time now) my pc will not complete a whole scan on
scan disk. it shows me a warning saying that windows is writing to another file and so the scan disk has restarted 10 times . this is shown to me mor than 10 times! so i cannot seem to complete a scan disk. furthermore, when i try and defragment, it will not do it either as it says that there is an error and so i must complete a scan disk. i have infact purchased a product called 'error guard'(anyone know about that one?) which althgough said that it fixed something like 257 critical errors, it didnt seem to really help. Can anyone else please help? Getting desperate, because i dont want any long term damage done to my pc and it seems to be slowing it and crashing it because of this. |

Besides Mike's excellent advice, you can also 'switch-off' the nag box
regarding the scan disk having restarted 10 times and just let scandisk continue until completion. However, if you do have stuff running in the background, Mike's suggestion of running scandisk in Safe Mode is the first line solution or you could take a look at ScanDefrag v5.2. This is a FREE utility, written by several well respected contributors to these News Groups and has been designed to run several original MS utilities through a 'filter' which eliminates the usual junk which stops Scandisk (and Defrag) from running properly in Normal Mode - as you are already experiencing g You can get ScanDefrag at either of the two sites below - and be sure to read the associated notes for setting it up: http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2...efrag/main.htm http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html HTH and good luck Mart "Mike M" wrote in message ... Try booting to Safe Mode and running scandisk from there. What is probably happening is that you possibly have some other application such as an AV or firewall that is writing a log file whilst scandisk is running which then causes scandisk to restart. Running scandisk in Safe Mode should stop this from happening. -- Mike Maltby SOFYXIT wrote: it seems that (for some time now) my pc will not complete a whole scan on scan disk. it shows me a warning saying that windows is writing to another file and so the scan disk has restarted 10 times . this is shown to me mor than 10 times! so i cannot seem to complete a scan disk. furthermore, when i try and defragment, it will not do it either as it says that there is an error and so i must complete a scan disk. i have infact purchased a product called 'error guard'(anyone know about that one?) which althgough said that it fixed something like 257 critical errors, it didnt seem to really help. Can anyone else please help?
