Help, my views got messed up and "folder options" is now restricted

I have no idea what has happened here, I think vista somehow messed
something up when I connected to a file share, but even that seems odd
since I've been doing this for 6 months. I'm using Windows 98SE and
have files shares on a LAN to a Vista 64 Home Premium machine.


I can't choose "folder options" in the My Documents folder or any
random subfolder. When I try to do so, I get a message "This operation
has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
Please contact your system administrator".

I _AM_ the administrator, and there is only one account on this
computer, the administrator account that logs in automatically. I
didn't want multiple users and set things up that way. I am not
concerned about security from the console, I want accessibility.

Anyways, I can get the folder options dialog box to come up from Start-
settings-folder options, but the "remember each folder's view
settings" does NOT work. Worse, in despartion I tried resetting my
folder's views. Now I can't get the My Documents to stay in details
view sorted by type. That's what I want the default view to be. Using
the control panel to get into it, I the option of "like this folder"
for setting defaults is dimmed.

It would be nice for you to define how you setup your network to start
so we have a bit more to work with, such as.

1. Did you install the DSClient?

2. What protocol(s) are you using within the local network?

3. What folder/directories have you shared on the respective computers?

4. What other computers are installed in the network?

5. Is this 9X computer an actual computer or is it being run in a VM?

6. What security programs [AV, etc.] are you using?

*IF* you are referring to the VISTA computer:

You *definitely* want to _stop using the administrator's account_ for
all usage, for a start, then check the recent changes done in VISTA from
MS updates. Microsoft has modified some of the XP, VISTA, WIn7 security
due to constant security issues in mixed networks, and you may have just
received some of those updates.
*IF* you have shared something between the computers in My Documents,
then the network {the machines sharing those areas/documents} will
control those activities.

Well, like it or not, you ARE part of a network in which sharing and
security *IS* under control of the settings on the various computers,
the NT based being more likely to affect others within the network.

Yes, LONG ago to connect to a domain. There was no problem back then
and I haven't connected to a domain in at least 3 years.
2. What protocol(s) are you using within the local network?

Standard TCP and NetBIOS. I forget if NetBUEI gets used like this or
not, but it's just the standard setup over a TCP network. No WINS, no
DNS.
Basically I plugged both computers into a Linksys Router/Switch, gave
the 98 machine a static IP, let the Vista use DHCP, and turned file
sharing on. I won't get into the problems I've had with ****ta and
being unable to access its shares from the 98 computer. That I've
posted in the networking thread months ago and Microsoft couldn't help
me.
3. What folder/directories have you shared on the respective computers?

I have two hard drives in the 98 computer. The D drive is shared
completely full access and I rely on the Linksys' firewall to block
internet access. The C drive is shared read-only, except My Documents
which is shared full access. I tried turning the sharing off to no
effect.
4. What other computers are installed in the network?

A Dell Optiplex GX 110 running Windows 98, and a Gateway DX Something
(not printed on the case and I forgot what number) running Vista 64
Home Premium. Prior to that I had an XP computer but it broke. There's
also a PowerMac 6500 with Mac OS 8.6 connected to the switch, but at
the time I noticed the problem it was powered down. The PowerMac is
older than the 98 computer and has never caused problems. It's main
function these days is to be a TV set, just like it doubled as one
back in my college dorm. I'm not concerned about the PowerMac, as I've
owned it the longest and havne't had a problem. The Dell was purchased
because I needed to be able to run WIndows apps and Virtual PC 3.0 was
too agonizingly slow.
5. Is this 9X computer an actual computer or is it being run in a VM?

Actual, physical computer. It's old, but it's also the newest
functioning computer I've got with a 3.5" drive.
6. What security programs [AV, etc.] are you using?

I've got Spybot Search & Destroy and I think AVG is still installed. I
need to find a new free anti-virus for the 98 computer. Updated
versions of both are on Vista 64.

XP Pro on the same hardware have no such problem. I had e-mail

I don't think Windows 98 has that distinction. I've been using this
setup for many years without a problem. I think you're thinking of
2000/XP/Vista for the different types of user accounts.

You have or rather VISTA has taken over assigned control to the VISTA
computer, its the MASTER for the rest of the network since you're not
part of a domain anymore AND now there is no XP involved.

AND NOTE: sharing MY DOCUMENTS is not recommended because *even in
Win9X* it holds a special OS protection scheme [same for Documents and
Settings in the newer OSs]. You have avoided the recommendations defined
by Microsoft to NOT share these for/in its networking functions.

the moment... and I realized that it WAS the Win98 computer with the

It was, but you indicated "I am the administrator" aspect *after*
indicating no policies installed in Win98, so it needed defined for
clarity. UNLESS policies were used, never mention administrator settings
in a 9X including network WITHOUT directing absolutely.

Do you want help, or am I going to find reluctance and more indications
like this. One of the simplest potential fixes would be to advise the
COMPLETE removal ALL the prior networking settings from your computers
and start from scratch... just remember that VISTA DID receive some
updates which make 9X connections even more difficult than originally
involved.

No they didn't bring it back for VISTA or Win7, it was only available
in Win9X and somewhat in NT3; newer MS OSs run their own

I _AM_ the administrator, and there is only one account on this
computer, the administrator account that logs in automatically. I
didn't want multiple users and set things up that way. I am not
concerned about security from the console, I want accessibility.

It would be nice for you to define how you setup your network to start
so we have a bit more to work with, such as.

1. Did you install the DSClient?

Yes, LONG ago to connect to a domain. There was no problem back then
and I haven't connected to a domain in at least 3 years.
2. What protocol(s) are you using within the local network?

Standard TCP and NetBIOS. I forget if NetBUEI gets used like this or
not, but it's just the standard setup over a TCP network. No WINS, no
DNS.
Basically I plugged both computers into a Linksys Router/Switch, gave
the 98 machine a static IP, let the Vista use DHCP, and turned file
sharing on. I won't get into the problems I've had with ****ta and
being unable to access its shares from the 98 computer. That I've
posted in the networking thread months ago and Microsoft couldn't help
me.

You have or rather VISTA has taken over assigned control to the VISTA
computer, its the MASTER for the rest of the network since you're not
part of a domain anymore AND now there is no XP involved.

3. What folder/directories have you shared on the respective computers?

I have two hard drives in the 98 computer. The D drive is shared
completely full access and I rely on the Linksys' firewall to block
internet access. The C drive is shared read-only, except My Documents
which is shared full access. I tried turning the sharing off to no
effect.

AND NOTE: sharing MY DOCUMENTS is not recommended because *even in
Win9X* it holds a special OS protection scheme [same for Documents and
Settings in the newer OSs]. You have avoided the recommendations defined
by Microsoft to NOT share these for/in its networking functions.

4. What other computers are installed in the network?

A Dell Optiplex GX 110 running Windows 98, and a Gateway DX Something
(not printed on the case and I forgot what number) running Vista 64
Home Premium. Prior to that I had an XP computer but it broke. There's
also a PowerMac 6500 with Mac OS 8.6 connected to the switch, but at
the time I noticed the problem it was powered down. The PowerMac is
older than the 98 computer and has never caused problems. It's main
function these days is to be a TV set, just like it doubled as one
back in my college dorm. I'm not concerned about the PowerMac, as I've
owned it the longest and havne't had a problem. The Dell was purchased
because I needed to be able to run WIndows apps and Virtual PC 3.0 was
too agonizingly slow.
5. Is this 9X computer an actual computer or is it being run in a VM?

Actual, physical computer. It's old, but it's also the newest
functioning computer I've got with a 3.5" drive.
6. What security programs [AV, etc.] are you using?

I've got Spybot Search & Destroy and I think AVG is still installed. I
need to find a new free anti-virus for the 98 computer. Updated
versions of both are on Vista 64.
*IF* you are referring to the VISTA computer:

Nope, Vista's problem is that trying to access it's shares cause the
98 machine to lock up. Accessing shares from a virtual machine running
XP Pro on the same hardware have no such problem. I had e-mail
correspondance with Microsoft last spring and they were unable to
resolve the problem.
This problem with folder options happens on the real Windows 98
machine.

But you ARE, because the Win98 computer is not in-control of itself at
the moment... and I realized that it WAS the Win98 computer with the
folder issues.

** So what *EXACTLY* have you already tried so I don't spend a few days
writing things already run through. **

FYI: No one in the networking/server field likes to spend days trying
to discover, through lengthy discussions, what issues may be involved in
the diagnostics; so ALWAYS provide detailed network and settings
information with ANY request for help.


You *definitely* want to _stop using the administrator's account_ for
all usage, for a start, then check the recent changes done in VISTA from
MS updates. Microsoft has modified some of the XP, VISTA, WIn7 security
due to constant security issues in mixed networks, and you may have just
received some of those updates.
*IF* you have shared something between the computers in My Documents,
then the network {the machines sharing those areas/documents} will
control those activities.

I don't think Windows 98 has that distinction. I've been using this
setup for many years without a problem. I think you're thinking of
2000/XP/Vista for the different types of user accounts.



Anyways, I can get the folder options dialog box to come up from Start-settings-folder options, but the "remember each folder's view

settings" does NOT work. Worse, in despartion I tried resetting my
folder's views. Now I can't get the My Documents to stay in details
view sorted by type. That's what I want the default view to be. Using
the control panel to get into it, I the option of "like this folder"
for setting defaults is dimmed.

So, what could be restricting my access to folder options, and how do
I fix it? I'm not part of a domain, there should be no group policy. I
don't have a group policy editor. I'm the admin, but don't have a clue
how to fix this problem.

Well, like it or not, you ARE part of a network in which sharing and
security *IS* under control of the settings on the various computers,
the NT based being more likely to affect others within the network.



I managed to fix the views partially by rebooting to safe mode and
using "scanreg /restore", but Folder Options is still FUBAR and I
don't think any changes "stick".

This should have been a clue that the problem was on win98, I don't
think this feature was present on XP, although I don't know if they
brought it back for Vista.

It was, but you indicated "I am the administrator" aspect *after*
indicating no policies installed in Win98, so it needed defined for
clarity. UNLESS policies were used, never mention administrator settings
in a 9X including network WITHOUT directing absolutely.

Do you want help, or am I going to find reluctance and more indications
like this. One of the simplest potential fixes would be to advise the
COMPLETE removal ALL the prior networking settings from your computers
and start from scratch... just remember that VISTA DID receive some
updates which make 9X connections even more difficult than originally
involved.

No they didn't bring it back for VISTA or Win7, it was only available
in Win9X and somewhat in NT3; newer MS OSs run their own
services/servers and use different routines and controls. LONG GONE are

Back up your registry, then start regedit, expand and highlight the following
keys and look in the right window for "NoFolderOptions". If you find it,
delete it. You may have to restart the computer for the change to take effect.
