Reinstall wins 98 se
Hi All,
I am going to reinstall Wins 98se, and would like to know if i would have to reinstall other applications (eg. MS applications) afterthe OS is done? Is there any way to reinstall the OS and the rest remain unchanged? Please help. Thank you very much. Zoe |

I have been able to get partial and flakey application restoral by saving and restoring the registry. It may not be worth the effort. -- JosephKK Gegen dummheit kampfen die Gotter Selbst, vergebens.Â*Â* --Schiller |

You can run the W98SE installation from within Windows and none of your
existing installed applications will be affected. However, this doesn't really qualify as a 're-installation' of the OS and might not achieve whatever it is that you are trying to do. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Zoe" wrote in message news Hi All, I am going to reinstall Wins 98se, and would like to know if i would have to reinstall other applications (eg. Is there any way to reinstall the OS and the rest remain unchanged? Yes, because when the instal routine detects an existing installation you are prompted to decide whether to reuse the old Registry or not. If so, all application file references in the old Registry go into the new one. This poses the question (which Win98 does not ask) why you are reinstalling the Operating System? 90 per cent of the time, we reinstal because something is unfixably wrong with the old Registry -- so deciding to keep the old Registry exposes us to the risk of keeping the flaws which made us need to reinstal in the first place. It usually saves time to bite the bullet and reinstal all our applications as well. Once we get a good installation of the OS, and back it up appropriately (see www.xxcopy.com) it ought to last for several years. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |
