Default startup is looking for a printer that was removed, error msg inside

hi,

I am helping a friend who just deleted a "bunch of stuff" before calling me
for help.. the C: drive keeps filling up and he runs out of room, he had no
idea what was doing it, but he started just deleting folders instead of
removing programs via the Add/Remove function.. (sigh)

at any rate, ONE of the problems is an error message on startup that says:
"C:\Program File\HP Deskjet 895c series\ereg\remind.sch", I have got to that
location, and there is no such folder or file, there are no hidden files. I
did a quick search in the registry for HP Deskjet, and 895c, etc. and a
couple of other combinations... but it found nothing. Went in and manually
searched through the Local System\Software, and deleted an HP folder that
had that printer listed in the sub-folders (keys), but the error still shows
up on bootup.. Any ideas how to find where this is coming from and how to
get rid of it?

btw, there is no HP listing in the Add/Remove window.

Thanks,
niteowl

Assuming you have already checked the obvious
places [ / Programs / Startup and MSCONFIG and
C:/Temp for leftover installation routines ]
you must simply look in other startup files for this
particular file call. SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI are
likely places to start.

checked out the startup items in the msconfig, and found the line that was
calling for that file.. it was on the F: partition, part of a backup copy of
the C: drive... unchecked it, and edited the system.ini file taking out the
referenced printer... the error no longer appears on bootup..

thanks,
niteowl
