Default Digital camera( microdrive storage) USB to win98

Hi,

I have a digital camera (video/stills) which uses a Hitachi 4GB
microdrive for the storage.
I can transfer files from it via USB to my XP laptop, as the XP
automatically recognises the camera and it comes up as a 'drive
letter'.
Can anyone tell me how I can do this using my win98 machine.

I would appreciate any help.

Cheers.

Read the documentation. If this camera supports
Win98 (as it supports WinXP) you simply instal the
Win98 software on the Win98 machine. If this hardware
has no Win98 drivers (likely if the microdrive was first
marketed after WinXP had become standard) you are
out of luck.

I forgot exactly what I did but I think all it took was to install
the USB 2.0 software in W98se and you get automatic drive
recognition. Works here anyway on two different boxes.

The OP suggests this did not happen when he connected
a microdrive camera to his Win98 PC. We do not know
whether he has USB.v.1 or USB.v.2. That may be why
the first reply suggested he read the Hitachi manual.

Try a universal mass storage driver.

Unofficial Windows 98 SE Native USB Drivers (NUSB):
http://www.mdgx.com/spx/NUSB23E.EXE [649KB]

NUSB v2.4 INF Update [66 KB]:
http://www.mdgx.com/spx/NUSB24.EXE

This Orangeware driver should provide USB2.0 support if your
motherboard is capable:

Does W98 then not intrinsically support USB2? (I have USB2 ports that are
working fine, but that could be at 1.1 speeds.)

Supported Universal Serial Bus Host Controllers for Windows 98 and
Windows Me:

Hardware Compatibility List, Windows 98, 08/05/2004:
https://winqual.microsoft.com/download/hcl/Win98HCL.txt

Win98SE natively supports my SiS7001 USB1.1 controller, but I had to
use the Orangeware driver for my SiS7002 USB2 controller.

Ah, I see - more complicated than I thought.
If an interface is running, does that mean it is supported, or will it work
with any interface but only at 1.1 speed without extra drivers if it isn't
on the list (for example, did your SiS7002 not work at all, or did it just
work at 1.1 speeds until you used the driver)?
