fresh install to SCSI hard drive hangs at 8% mark
I am trying to install Windows 98 SE to a newly formatted Seagate
Cheetah 36MB SCSI drive. I used the AHA 2940 U host adapter's configuration menu to recognize the drive. I booted from a Windows 98 startup floppy and then used fdisk and format from the boot floppy to make one large active FAT32 partition. The CD-ROM is a 44X IDE unit set to slave (jumper on or not didn't matter). It is recognized as drive E. The whole process went smoothly. The whole 36 GB of drive C is recognized and passes Scandisk including a suface scan. The install proceeds normally through all steps until the 8% mark of files copied. Then the computer freezes. I rebooted and ran the DOS dir command. Files have been transferred and the Windows directory is created. When I try again the same thing always happens at the point of 8% of the files transferred. The computer has an old SI54P socket 5 motherboard with a Pentium 100 cpu with 64 MB of ram. The SCSI host adapter is in PCI slot 4 of 4. I have just spent the better part of a frustrating day searching Adaptec's, Microsoft's, and Seagate's websites as well as others to no avail. I hope someone can help. |

Try copying the needed installation files to the HDD first:
c: md win98 copy e:\win98\*.* c:\win98 cd win98 setup (I also run setup /? to get the setup switches so I can prevent a lot of unnecessary functions, before running setup. Have to use the /? info because my memory sucks, and because they're slightly different from version to version.) Might also try cleaning the CD. Clean from center to edge, and if you want to apply a bit of Turtle Wax, so much the better, again polishing from center to edge. Only real killer is if the *label* side is scratched through to the plastic. The underside of the label is where the data is actually stored. -- Gary S. I can try copy but it only copies files, not directories and their
contents. There is no xcopy on the setup disk. I'll let you know what happens. Gary S. By the way, I "sysed" c: and the computer boots just fine from it.

If you use the commands I gave you, all of the necessary files will be
copied to the HD. There are no sub-directories involved. All of the files are in the Win98 directory on the CD, and not in any sub-directories or other directories. The rest is fluff. -- Gary S. Hmmm... Well, at least you know it isn't the CD, s.
Sorry, I have to stop and go make a late dinner. I'll see what I can come up with later tonight or tomorrow. But I suspect that 8% figure is a notable one that can be used in a KB or Google search, along with "windows 98" "win98", "setup", "stalls", perhaps. The quotes I used here aren't necessary, but you *should* enclose "8%" in quotes. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User http://grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm http://grystmill.com/articles/security.htm wrote in message oups.com... Same old 8% freeze running setup from C:\win98, only a lot quieter since the CD wasn't whirling away. I at first I thought it was a corrupted CD so I tried a completely different unused one. Same problem. wrote: I can try copy but it only copies files, not directories and their contents. There is no xcopy on the setup disk. I'll let you know what happens. Gary S. You probably have it right, but would like to hear from you.
Is the PC set to boot from scsi? Is the scsi adapter bios setup to boot? Is the scsi hard drive setup properly for booting, and is the scsi ID either 0 or 1 for the scsi hard drive? Is anything sharing the same hardware irq the scsi adapter uses at the bios level, and is it the proper irq number? If you have alot of peripherals, try removing all during the initial windows install? -- Jonny wrote in message ups.com...
