Windows Explorer cannot open Word files
Probably a poor association of Word files in Explorer-View-Folder
Options-File Types. What version of Word? What do you have as the "application to open" in File Types for .doc files? (I assume that is what you are talking about) ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer http://dts-l.org/index.html On Tue, 28 Mar 2006 00:43:02 -0800, Rosemary wrote: Hi I am running W95, and can no longer open Word files from Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer cannot open Word files
Hi Alan
Many thanks for your reply. I am using Office 97. I had a similar problem on another machine (using W98) and posted a query to the relevant newsgroup. The solution provided there solved both the W98 and W95 problems. I have posted the solution below, in case anyone else has the same difficulty in the future. An alternative approach was also suggested, which I did not need to try. The details are in the W98 General newsgroup. Thanks for your help. Rosemary Dear Don and Juan Many thanks, both, for your quick and helpful replies. I tried Don's solution first and it worked perfectly. It also, coincidentally, fixed a similar problem I had on a W95 machine with Word. Thanks again. Rosemary "Don Phillipson" wrote: "Rosemary" wrote in message ... I am using W98. When i try to open Excel files from Windows Explorer, it does not work. This is only a recent problem - it used to work just fine. I can still find and open the files directly from Excel. "File Association" may have been lost, viz. the Registry item that connects all files of type XLS with Excel. 1. The theory is explained in the help file. 2. To reset File Assoc: -- select (highlight) one XLS icon -- hold down shift key and right click on this icon -- select "Open with . . ." -- and select in the list Excel -- and uncheck the box "always use this program . . " -- and double click. This should open the data file in Excel. If it works OK repeat the process, and this time check the box "always use this program . . " which will write the selection into the Registry. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) "Alan Edwards" wrote: Probably a poor association of Word files in Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types.
