Default Invalid page fault MSPAINT.EXE

Here is something really wierd.

Using a standard Win98 se setup on a standard desktop PC with 512mb ram and
a 750mhz AMD duron processor 20gb HDD

After opening, modifying and re-saving a JPG image using the SAVE AS tab, I
get the following error msgs (only) when I attempt to continue modifying the
image using the "LINE" tool.with color black.

"MSPAINT caused an invalid page fault in
module MSPAINT.EXE at 016f:01012837".

followed by

"MSPAINT caused an invalid page fault in
module MFC42.DLL at 016f:6c371351".

The error does not occur under any other condition.

ie when saving using SAVE. as opposed to SAVE AS followed by use of the
line tool

or when using SAVE AS BMP followed by the use of the line tool

or using ANY other tool first before using the LINE tool.

or by using the line tool in any color other than BLACK.

Expressed another way :

the error only occurs when after attempting to use the LINE tool in BLACK
immediately after performing a JPG - SAVE AS.

I have explicitly followed ALL the MS knowledge base fixes for MSPAINT.EXE
and MFC42.DLL errors, and I have also downloaded and used the JPEG graphic
filter registry fixes for JPEGIM32.FLT as recommended by the "one human".

I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the MSPAINT utility and deleted it's
associated registry entry adnausium, all to no avail.

in all other respects the MSPAINT utility behaves itself.

This faulty behaviour however is NEW, it did not used to do this and the new
behaviour occurred after recently installing some LOGITECH web cam
software.

To try and eliminate the faulty behaviour I have uninstalled that S/W but i
cannot get rid of the described trait.

I am assuming that some how there is a modified or residue Registry entry
somewhere that comes into play under the conditions described.

ANY IDEAS please.

Regards Ramon

Don't have an answer for you Ramon, but your post is interesting because
the same thing happens to me sometimes using MS Paint and the line tool . I
haven't narrowed it down as much as you to figure out the exact
circumstances under which it happens, but I know if happens sometimes with
the line tool .. I have win98se, Pent III 600 and Gateway laptop with 12 gig
drive, 160 RAM. Interesting. I'll be following this thread in case anyone
has any idea.

Default Invalid page fault MSPAINT.EXE

"ATMSYS.DRV" is not causing the problem in MSPaint, as I do not have
that message. Mine always says: "Dr. Watson found nothing obviously
unusual.". Yet, you know, MSPaint will crash on me, under the
circumstance you have described. Also, it crashes with a red (at least)
Line color as well.

I guess first will be to click that URL I posted. (I do not recall it to
be greatly helpful, though.) Next...
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=AT...=Google+Search
"ATMSYS.DRV" comes up 1700 times. Look for something sensible, & come
back with any further questions. Remember, it may be possible nothing is
really wrong with that at all, if you never get a crash involving it.

Doing the "Line" thing in MSPaint? Absolutely, you get TWO crashes, as I
posted earlier. And you already knew that. I guess everyone will crash
doing that.

OK PCR thanks for the info that this happens to everyone, but what i then
cannot get my head around is that THIS behaviour is NEW to my system?

In terms that i might be able to follow, what do you think happens to a
systen to cause it to develop this trait and how might it be reversed?

OR, do i just have to work around it by NOT selecting the Line tool after a
save?

Doing the "Line" thing in MSPaint? Absolutely, you get TWO crashes, as I
posted earlier. And you already knew that. I guess everyone will crash
doing that.

Default Invalid page fault MSPAINT.EXE

I guess Windows Update updated the problem into MSPaint somehow. I do
not see that MSPaint.exe or MFC42.DLL were ever updated, though. They
are about as old as a file gets in Win98SE, & neither in mentioned in my
runs of SFC, in C:\Windows\SFCLog.txt.

So, it's mystifying, but sometimes one .dll will call another.
Therefore, it could be another .dll that was updated.

Default Invalid page fault MSPAINT.EXE

OK, now i have 4 versions of MFC42.DLL currently on my system now so if i
temporarily eliminate them one at a time so that the MSPaint version cannot
call upon outside help will this track doww the source of the problem.?

Alternatively how might one prevent a dll calling for outside help. is it
possible to ring fence the others?
