Default Sound Stutters

Still no lasting joy.
I ran the MSI update utility. The green? didn't go away but when I
reinstalled the Audigy the sound seemed OK. I then added the CH Flight
Sim Yoke USB and the sound still seemed OK. I then added the CH pedals
and the problem returned. I have not been able to replicate this.
I have removed all CH software and references to it in Device Manager. I
have rerun the MSI update utility. The Audigy still gives the same
problem. I have uninstalled the audigy and reinstalled the onboard
sound. The same problem is there. Device Manager in safe and normal mode
looks OK, Except for the green?.

Sisoft Sandra shows 2 entices under intel USB Host Controller 24D4, one
shows 8 ports with gang switching power and the other looks normal with
only 2 ports. There is only one entry for 24D4 in safe and normal Device
Manager. I don't know what this means.

As far as I can tell everything else works OK. At one stage I added back
my Canon USB scanner and this worked and reported USB 2.0 when connected
to the onboard USB ports, even though they had the green ?.

At the moment the only USB device connected is the ADSL modem USB 1.1.
and this seems to work OK.

I'm sorry to be taking so much of your time.

Have you tried using MSI's LiveUpdate to check the status of the other
onboard drivers??

(you can use the utility's preference settings to prevent it loading at
boot)

How is the sound using just the onboard AC97 output?

'Scuse 'buttinski' - and I've missed some of the thread - but when you
'uninstalled' your onboard sound drivers, did you remember to disable it in
the BIOS?

Trying to run two or more sound devices at once can sometimes cause resource
issues/conflicts.

Just a thought.

Yes. Always disabled and drivers uninstalled except if I need to test
it. I have never used the onboard sound, preferring a separate sound
card. My current problem seems independent of the card, Creative PCI512,
Trust 714 DX and Audigy 2 NX (USB) all give the same symptoms. I use
driver cleaner to remove any traces of uninstalled drivers.

I don't know whether this is relevant but I have just discovered that I
can't play audio cds through either the CD ROM or the DVD ROM. Windows
Media Player opens with an error message re digital audio. The Media
Player Options/Tools/Devices lists the two players but will not open the
Properties boxes.
Device manager shows both devices working, DMA and Digital Audio
enabled. Disabling digital audio makes no difference. This is with the
on board Soundmax installed and enabled.

I very rarely play music cds, but I have in the past.

Certainly sounds like driver issues from here. Try Audio instead of Digital.
Any improvement? (You may have to run the audio cable between your CD-ROM
and sound card)

What about midi files? Try "flourish.mid" - in the Windows\Media folder (I
think!)

BTW - Green ? - Don't be too alarmed, see:-
"Description of Green Question Mark in Device Manager"

But it *may* explain things.

Thanks for the info on green ? It seems to fit my situation.

I am now running on the audigy2nx having uninstalled the device,
software and disabled the
onboard sound in the bios. The sound is still horrible but I have fixed
the audio CD problem by reinstalling the ASPI files. Something must
have overwritten some of them so they were mismatched.

That just leaves the stutters!

I see you have the problems with the CD sorted out already - well done.

I'm not a great fan of SiSoft Sandra - but it doesn't often get this sort of
thing wrong.
Whatever, the fact that the problem exists in both the external and internal
sound configurations would indicate that it's a software problem, rather
than a USB-related problem.

I can't for the life of me work out why adding the CH pedals would screw the
sound, unless there's a driver conflict, or there's some kind of output from
the pedals which affects sound.
Have you tried uninstalling the CH stuff again, and then running the
CHdelete utility - does the sound then return to normal??
If so, then we may have a cause/effect and can work on it. - or you can
raise it with CH for their comment/fix.

Thank you for staying with me.
1. I am wondering whether whatever application it was that upset the
ASPI configuration may have also changed some other settings affecting
sound that is independent of the sound card in use?

2. I can't download the chdelete.exe file from CH products. Its on an
ftp site and both IE and Netscape just stall when I try to access it.

3. I'm wondering if the Pro pedals thing was just coincidence. There are
no references to CH products in device manager or Windows explorer.

4. I have a System Restore point for a date when the stuttering was
tolerable. What are the implications of restoring to that point, given
all the changes since then, eg antivirus updates, new sound card,
updated drivers and so on?

5. I have a hard disc which has nothing of value on it. If I disconnect
the HDD containing my OS from the Mobo could I install ME on the spare
disc with just the minimum needed to test the sound? If so can I easily
get back to using my current installation?

I really don't want to do anything to make matters worse. At the moment
the only thing I can't do is use the Flight Sim, or listen to any sound
source. I can't afford to lose my Office applications or Broadband. All
my data files on on a third separate hard disk.

Hold on - I'll have a go....
1) This is possible - what did you install/remove at around the time the
problem first surfaced?

2) I get a 'server busy' response - with no codes - so I guess that they
have server problems..... I suggest emailing their support lines and asking
for a copy by email ( or getting their download FTP site fixed!g).

3) - the references are probably within the registry - and the
C:\Windows\INF and C:\Windows\System folder. The files involved don't need
to have 'ch' in the names.

4) How old is the SR point? - if it's more than a week old, then the risks
of using it are possibly greater than the current problems.

5)Assuming the 'spare;' disk isn't currently attached to the system (and so
not seen by it), then it's easy enough to replace the current one, and
install ME to the spare - It would act as a test of the hardware, but I'm
not sure that would get us any further, as we've already established that
this almost has to be a software problem. - If the disk is currently
attached to the system and seen by it, then you'll have to be careful using
it, as System Restore will almost certainly reset when you replace the
original configuration, due to changing Disk ID's (unless you are VERY
careful - and even then, it's not guaranteed!).

I see you have the problems with the CD sorted out already - well done.

I'm not a great fan of SiSoft Sandra - but it doesn't often get this sort
of thing wrong.
Whatever, the fact that the problem exists in both the external and
internal sound configurations would indicate that it's a software
problem, rather than a USB-related problem.

I can't for the life of me work out why adding the CH pedals would screw
the sound, unless there's a driver conflict, or there's some kind of
output from the pedals which affects sound.
Have you tried uninstalling the CH stuff again, and then running the
CHdelete utility - does the sound then return to normal??
If so, then we may have a cause/effect and can work on it. - or you can
raise it with CH for their comment/fix.
