How much space for WIndows ME Install

On a 40g hard drive....

A minimum of 320MB of free space is required although in reality the
minimum partition size should be 2-4GB unless you are going to relocate
the swap file, message store, desktop. my documents and much else to other
partitions. System Restore requires a minimum of around 300MB of free
space to function.

Uh?

If you're asking how much disk space does Win ME require, just 2G is
possible, but imo takes too much management for the average user. 3G is
obviously better, but you can still run out of space (for instance System
Restore needs 300M free space or it turns itself off). imo 4G is perfect.

In all these scenarios you need to move My Documents and the like (ie
personal data and temp files) to another drive/partition. Not to do so is
pretty irresponsible anyway (at least once you know it is!) so is no
hardship.

I used to have the swapfile first partition of the 2nd equally-fast hd,
sharing with 98SE, ME and XP (shame Linux won't use it!) but recently
abandoned it. I never noticed a gain beyond a very little space freed up. Do
you think it's worth it?

Also, of course, I feel the relocation of My Documents and the like is
closer to a necessity. But I forgot to mention message store folders! In
fact, that's what I've done with the old swapfile partition, put the
OE/Outlook stores there.

Saves space as a) all systems use the same location. b) each partition can
be that bit smaller, c) images of the system partitions are also a bit
smaller. Note though that for XP I retain a 25MB swap file on the system
partition.

In fact, that's what I've done with the old swapfile partition, put
the OE/Outlook stores there.

Personally like yourself I feel it almost irresponsible to leave these
objects in the system partition. For myself I move, and share between
OSs, the My documents, Desktop, Message store(s), Address book,
Favourites, Cookies, swap file, TIF, TEMP & TMP objects (both user and
system).

I forgot to mention that I also relocate the My Music, My Pictures and My
Videos objects in folders or in the case of music, a partition, outside of
the relocated My Documents object. Oh, and none of the names of which
include "My", nor is My Documents called Documents but instead "Data".

That's a new one on me. Why is not moving those things "irresponsible"?

Because leaving them in the default locations means any Trojan or malware
you have the misfortune to acquire will find them more easily than if
relocated elsewhere.

In addition by keeping the system partition "lean and mean" defrags for
example are much quicker to complete and have less of the restart problems
experienced by many with large single partition systems. Further by
relocating ones data on a second partition or drive makes reinstalling an
OS far less of a problem in the event of major problems and ensures little
or no loss of data. Similarly far less space is required to back up the
system partition which means it may just get done a little more frequently
than otherwise. :-)

It also means that your precious My Documents folder (you do keep everything
there, don't you?) won't be blown away if you lose your Windows partition.
Actually, the best place for My Docs is on a separate *drive*. That way the
entire C: drive can go south and you are still safe. (It has happened to
me.)

It's irresponsible in the same sense that not installing a firewall, an
antivirus pgm, and an antispyware pgm is irresponsible once you know about
them. Even if you don't care if you infect yourself, the rest of us care
that you don't infect *us*.
