Default Expanded screen

Following a 'crash' and using recovery disc (lost all
progs!) I managed to get things going again. Two
problems - 1. Graphics are very poor and 2. The screen
view size is too large - How do I adjust the size viewed
to fit my screen? Would be grateful for any advice.

John - start with this

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

If not, then update your graphics drivers from the manufacturer's website

.Noel,

thanks for advice. Rebooted from Safe to Normal.
Interesting details given. I got lost in attempting to
follow the online instructions but, basically: Hope this
makes sense: PCI VGA-Compatible Display Adapter (Code
28) - already installed, but has a problem. Intel(R)
82815 Graphics Controller (not tested by Microsoft and
would not use). I downloaded 'critical' Direct X9.06 end
user. Display adaptor not configured properly. Needed
Plug Ins - the Wizard found them. Screen sizing OK. Type
face (on desktop small) Graphics better, but poor.
Computer continues to freeze - especially when printer is
used. Have checked printer out - all okay. Will continue
to download items suggested from Microsoft site. Will
keep on trying.

Did you Remove ALL the Display adapters while in Safe Mode?? - if not, then
go back and do so.

Here's the link to the latest available drivers for your chipset

Noel,
I have read your last comments and your CV. Clearly, you
know what you are doing and I do not! Before I proceed,
could you advise:
Safe Mode - OK
Device Manager - OK
ALL display adaptors (only shows one - Intel(R) 82815)
ALL Monitors (only shows Plug and Play)
System Devices (monitor icon) shows 30-odd! Would I need
to delete these too?
I have checked the Graphics drivers from the site you
suggested - it is already on my system.
Notes: The screen resolution is okay.
The graphics are better, but still inferior to what
they originally were.
Mouse and screen, regularly freeze - forcing me to
continually restart (my original problem prior to using
the recovery disc.
Many thanks for your time and expertise.
Regards,
John

Sorry for the delayed respond - I got sidetracked!.....

You've lost me there, John!
"System Devices (monitor icon) shows 30-odd!"
30-odd what??? devices? - duplicated devices? - error-flagged
devices? -cabbages?

Try resetting the graphics acceleration to one notch below highest, in
Display Properties|Settings|Advanced|Performance

OK out, and reboot

If that helps, then try removing your mouse drivers while in Safe Mode, and
rebooting - then take the graphics acceleration up again and see if it's
still stable.

If the stability disappears again, then try updating the mouse drivers.
