Default Cannot Reboot into DOS from 98SE

Hi Folks,

I used to depend regularly upon a
periodic "scanreg/fix/opt" execution to keep my Win98SE
system running clean.

But lately, when I try to reboot in DOS mode from
Windows, the system hangs up. The monitor is completely
blank, and nothing happens. At that point I need to reset
the computer to make things happen.

Anybody have a fix for this?

I still do all the other regular maintenance utilities,
and the system seems to be running pretty well otherwise.

Thanks very much!
Jim

The file that loads DOS is called command.com.

If you enter command or command.com in the Start = Run
box it brings up the DOS window within Windows.

So, locate the command.com files. There should be a copy
in the root directory, c:\command.com and in
c:\windows\command.com.

If there are no copies anywhere, try finding the file on
the Windows CD and copying it to both locations. If it is
missing from one location, copy it from the other location
and paste it to the missing location.

Right-clicking on the file and then clicking Properties
brings up an interesting window full of settings. There
should only be the archive attribute set.

Check your config.sys for lines containing a Creative sound driver. By =
remming the lines out they are not called. I had to do that on a machine =
that would not boot to DOS from Start Shutdown. I never found out why =
but the driver was the cause.
FWIW, that is a DOS sound emulation driver and is not needed if you do =
not use sound in DOS.
