Default Win Media Player caused a Major FUBAR

was running the Media Player with all the updates installed
while playing a music track the visual display begain the skip
so we stopped the player and restarted the computer.
first thing on restart the puter asked for a password.
(now our puter is not setup for passwords)
next the puter went into default video driver.
(the puter had completely lost all reference to the ATI board or drivers.)
we restarted in the safe mode and scanned for viruses using AVG..
None were found, we then scanned for spys using Lavasofts product.
again no spys..

Had to restore to an earlier date to clear the problem..

So, what happen? any reasonable explaination accepted.. )

Tks
