MSCONFIG (Startup)
I notice I have duplicate names in the DIRECTIORY along with the file names.
Is there any way to delete these duplicates?? |

If some have boxes marked and the duplicates do not, mark the duplicates and
after rebooting, they should disappear. Not all duplicates that are marked should be removed as they are required. Examples are the power profile and antivirus settings. Here are a couple of related articles: There are seven run keys in the registry that are used to start programs: 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run 2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce 4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce 5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices 6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServicesOnce 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunOnce\Setup If there is an item disabled in the Startup tab, MSconfig.exe, that was in one of these keys, it will be in an identically named key except that there will be a minus at the end, i.e., Run- I suppose any key could be duplicated; however, I have only found keys #1, #2 and #5 duplicated in my registry with a minus. If you want to get rid of a non-marked entry in MSconfig, delete the key with the minus sign behind it. When you disable an entry that is in the startup folder on the start menu, a folder is created on the start menu called Disabled Startup Items. As appropriate, delete the item from either the registry key or the Disabled folder. If the item is the only thing in the registry key or Disabled folder, you can delete the key or the folder also. Items can start from the run= and load= lines in the win.ini file. If disabled, they are placed in a norun= or noload= line. Go into the win.ini file and change the appropriate line back to the way it was, i.e., change norun=application name to run= and save the file. ****************** To cut back on the number of programs starting at boot, check the programs themselves for an option not to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray (others might require a right click) and then look for preferences or options. If you cannot find an option, look for the program in one of the following start up points and remove the reference to it: Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe): 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion*\Run 2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\*Run 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion*\RunOnce 4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\*RunOnce 5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion*\RunServices 6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion*\RunServicesOnce 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion*\RunOnce\Setup There is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager, http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/ You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the program itself. Remove the mark and it will be disabled. Then read the article about
removing disabled items again. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Bob" wrote in message news "Ron Badour" wrote: If some have boxes marked and the duplicates do not, mark the duplicates and after rebooting, they should disappear. There are valid reasons why some items may be duplicated in the Startup group. LoadPowerProfile is one such entry, and it should be left. Some antivirus programs also create entries which appear to be duplicates. It is important to be fully aware as to the purpose of an item, how and why it was put into the Startup, before making any changes. Otherwise you could inadvertently remove something that is important or at least useful. Good luck Ron Martell Duncan B.C.
