missing file after updates

After I downloaded critical security and some other updates
I get a blue screen saying "cannot find a device
file..referred to in system.ini...wol558vxd...press any key
to continue"

I did delete by mistake my wav and midi files by mistake
and now have no sounds. Are the two problems related. Any
fixes?

I'd really appreciate your help as I wasted an hour jumping
through hoops trying to get help from Microsoft (they
extended support for updates, but you just can't get to them)

wol558.vxd appears to be a driver for an Intel-based Ethernet LAN chipset. Do you
have and are you using a network adapter/NIC?

What "other" updates did you install besides the critical updates?
