Default Boot Up Splash Screen

I receintly as a matter I still have the computer in my office, it's for a
client. I mistakenly downloaded a file called sp2 for win 98 in the pkg was
tweak that was fine. But when I installed the file it changed the splash
screen to a grotesque version of the normal windows 98 splash screen any
thoughs would be appreciated. Its been along time since I worked on a "98"
machine

Depending on WHERE you got that supposed SP2, you have just modified that
system to ME, and likely some XP stuff.
Unless it came with an uninstall [which generally don't work that well],
your looking at a lot of manual resetting, or reinstalling the original OS.

If you mean the splash screen at startup, try this:

First, click Start Settings Folder Options View tab, and click to enable "Show
All Files" and click OK.

Find logo.sys in C:\, and rename it to logo.sy_, and accept the warning about
changing the file extension.

Now reboot and see if your splash screen at startup is back to normal.

Sometimes it takes thinking out of the box, and I appreciate your answer. The
purpose of this board is to pass along or to release knowlege that perhaps
you know as for fact, or perhaps you just stumbled upon. So I'm going to
share my findings with you after several hours of kicking the problem around.
I found that the file that was affected was called "logo.sys" located in the
root of "C". I deleted the file and when I shut the machine down and
rebooted, low and behold, the original windows logo splash screen appeared
like magic. Of course the file "logo.sys" was a hidden file so I had to go to
the "view area of the folder menue and checked show hidden files.
Thanks for sharing your answers.

Delete is fine in this case, but I generally advise rename, so the user can easily
revert if there is a problem.

Just for general info: Where did you get the "mistaken" SP2, and what did you
install from it?

As Glen said, not a problem. The boot screen is imbedded in the io.sys file
and it displays unless there is a logo.sys file on file in which case it
displays.

Okay, glad you got that part fixed, but my comment regarding the other
aspects may still apply. It would still be instrumental to know where you
got this supposed SP2 as you will likely have future issues.
