Default Wipe free space

The CD is
outdoors, in the 'trash', albeit in a bag that contains no organic
waste (and which I've already been down once to retrieve an old copy
of another prog!).

Been there, done that! Dump something because you don't need/ever use it
and five minutes later you're digging in the rubbish to recover it. g

Besides having long-since realised there's no need to overwrite
freespace - except perhaps in the situation you describe - I found that
it was
one of those progs that stopped SR working. I remember reporting it
to Mike - probably in systemtools.

How good it is, I don't know. I thought it was good at the time but
that's almost meaningless, I knew so little then! Presumably it does
work since it stopped SR working because basically it writes a series of
files to the HDD, which are
deleted on reboot. Only in doing so free space goes below the
critical 300MB required for SR, which then flushes and turns itself
off. For Win ME, for a user wishing to use SR, DestroyIt!2000 was a
prog written for Win 98 that dated rapidly! Of course, if one is
getting rid of ME it doesn't matter if one flushes
the RPs.

Whether you could find DestroyIt!2000 now, I don't know. Whether it's
small enough to e-mail to you via dial-up, I don't know. The CD is
outdoors, in the 'trash', albeit in a bag that contains no organic

Oh, if that's the case, my help was no help.

Thanks for the offer Shane but I think I'll go the ERASER route. I wouldn't
want your neighbours seeing you go through the trash, they might get the
wrong impression vbg.

I think I'll experiment this weekend. It's not like I have much to
lose given it no longer gets used. If something stupid happens, I can
always repartition; it's just that because it's an OEM, I have no
disks to reload.

Thanks again Mart, I appreciate your help.

Sorry I can't help Dan other than to suggest using Google which you
have already done. I've used BING to write zeros to entire drives
but have never attempted to do this to unused parts of a partition
where I want to retain the files. Defragging the drive doesn't
really seem to help either as I have found in the past that I have
been able to recover deleted files where the drive has subsequently
been defragged albeit that was on a system where the file system was
NTFS. --

Default Wipe free space - *another site*

Dan - (and anyone else who has been following this thread), it would appear
that the url I posted yesterday has 'vanished' this morning.

However, if you're still interested, I've found it (currently!) available at
the author's site :-
http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/
and note that is now version 5.3 (Feb 3, 2007).

Still untried and untested - at least by me! g

Good luck

Ooops.. The plot thickens.

Seems that version 5.3 was dated Jan 7, 2002 - not 2007 as I had indicated.
Looks like SoundForge and/or Garret Trant *may* have pulled.

I'll leave it to you guy's to sort it out g

Mart

I downloaded Eraser 5.82 yesterday from www.heidi.ie/eraser. It actually ran
like a charm, no problems whatsoever. I put the computer in a CLEAN BOOT
environment in order to ensure that nothing was open in the background and
initially wiped the unused space in a separate partition. Once done and
satisfied that it hadn't wiped everything, I then wiped unused space on my
C: drive. Given my relatively small 8 GB harddrive, it only took about an
hour to complete.

Interestingly, I also downloaded BC Wipe 3.10.4 by Jetico. It provided a 41
day free trial, and it too ran without a problem wiping unused space on
another partition.

As indicated I was only interested in wiping unused space, so I only read
the section related to this. In both cases all that was required was to
right click on a drive or partition and select either ERASE unused space
(ERASER) or Wipe free space with BC Wipe. However both utilities require a
lot more reading in order to familiarize oneself with the numerous options
available.

Again I want to thank you, and everyone else who have contributed, for your
continued support, it is much appreciated.

Happy Easter

Luckily they come once a week. I am absolutely appalled at the suggestion
they should come just once a fortnight (and I believe this government is
responsible for that one?)! In summer it stinks by the bins enough just from
sitting there 1 week! And there's always some lazy, unhygienic streak in the
neighbourhood. But mostly, I'm glad they come frequently enough that I was
able to part for good with 95! And every DOS version earlier than 6.22!
Actually I still have 5.00 on floppies, but no floppy drive anymore (and
thank the stars I'm not desperate enough to reassemble the other machine
that does have one!).

I look forward with eager anticipation (alternatively I anticipate with
forward eagerness!) the next visit from the dustbin men (Mum! It's the...I
actually used to think that was a very funny show - mind you I was in Junior
School at the time. I sincerely doubt now that it was a masterclass in
sparkling witticisms! Though I do remember looking out my aunt's window in
Sydenham and seeing the Rag'n'Bone Man doing his rounds...what relevance
that has I don't know but it seems apropos someho[w]...)

www.heidi.ie/eraser was back again earlier today. Glad you've got a
satisfactory result and thanks for the report - could be useful for any

As am I. Sadly with Red Ken in control and spending money like its going
out of fashion the poor old London punter/council tax payer doesn't stand
a chance. For example was I ever asked if I was prepared to pay
additional council tax for the next ten years to "allow" the Olympics to
come to London ... like h$ll I was!

Talking of floppy drives I've got a box here that has a dual floppy
(5¼/3½) that first saw the light of day around 1989 in a Viglen. Not that
I can remember when I last inserted a floppy of either size in the drive.
I do have a usb floppy that I use to load RAID drivers when installing XP,
something that can now be done using a usb pen drive with Vista.

Sydenham! My goodness. That was my mother's family home, or rather
Penge, Anerley and surrounding places (Norwood, Crystal Palace, Beckenham,
etc.). As for the Rag 'n' Bone man I wonder if it was the same one I
occasionally saw going down Maple Road?
