Default Error code 39 in device manager for DVD drive

My DVD drive doesn't work under XP Home. I'm getting an error under it in
device manager saying:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. the driver may be
corrupted or missing (code 39).

I tried uninstalling the device and then scanning for new hardware but the
device comes back with the same error. I tried a repair install. I tried
booting into a different install of XP on another partition to test my
hardware and it works fine in the other install. Any ideas? (Besides "use
the other install" - I need this one to work.) Thanks.

I'm not clear why you are posing a problem regarding XP Home to a
newsgroup supporting those still running the Win Me operating system.

However your problem is possibly due to a problem with either the upper or
lower filters. Have you perhaps recently uninstalled or uninstalled and
reinstalled CD or DVD software? Have a look at MS KB314060 "You can no
longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error
message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program
in Windows XP: "error code 31"" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=314060)
which might help get you back on track. Don't let the Code 31 in the KB
title put you off, the KB also applies to some code 39 errors amongst
several.
