OK boni, as I understand it from your reply and trying to translate your
'path' to the CABS folder containing the 53 items including the BASE2.CAB
(which in turn contains aspi2dos.sys) then the path is as follows :-

C:\aolxtras\CABS

If that is correct, then when you try to create a WinMe startup disk in
Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs / StartupDisk and you are confronted
with the message :-

'aspi2dos.sys' was not found.
Windows needs .... etc...

then direct the (incorrect) location to the one above. Hopefully it should
continue and you should now be able to make the Startup Disk.

I have no idea why your CABS folder containing the WinMe Installation files
are at that location!

Yes, But!! - it will only let you continue as far as loading THAT file
(in readiness for creating the Startup floppy) until it looks for the next
missing file, when it *may* stall again (and again!), until it finds ALL the
correct files required. - some 35 or so files in all. (Can't remember the
EXACT number, as I've added one or two extra files on my Startup disk - e.g.
deltree.exe, for those who are interested)

ALL the correct files are contained in the C:\aolxtras\CABS folder - **we
think! and hope!!**- so therefore, by directing your error message wizard
there in the first place, it *should* solve your problem and create the
Startup disk successfully, without any further error reports.

N.B. Not ALL of the required files are held in the c:command\ebd folder and
therefore you shouldn't direct the wizard to that folder.

what is the difference bet. subfolders or sub-directory ? in c \aolxtras

does this mean that Cabs is not a subfolder ?

Directories = old-speak for Folders.
MS used to call them Directories in Win 3 days, then started calling them
Folders in Win9X on.

Sub-folders are 'folders-off-folders"

C:\ = The 'Root' folder of the C: drive
C:\Windows = Windows Folder
C:\Windows\System = System Sub-folder (off the Windows Folder)

or graphically, as seen in Explorer :-

MainDrive (C
(+)
(+)
"
(+)
(+) WINDOWS
(+)
(+)
"
(+)
(+) SYSTEM

Hence, you can see why it's 'easier' to describe a 'Path' rather than trying
to show these (+) diagrams.

Now CABS *is* a subfolder - but it *may* or *may not* contain the xxx.cab
files which you need (depends on where YOUR installation files have been put
on YOUR computer.

You need to search for the folder containing the WinMe installation files -
which contains several CAB files (including the BASE2.CAB file)

For a (very) simplified explanation of where your CAB files ought to be and
why they may not be in that 'Normal' location on your computer, see the 1st
para. of the Summary of the following KB article :-
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;266735

If you don't understand Disk Filing Systems and Management, I suggest you
take a trip to your local library to research or join a local computer
club/class. We seem to be going around in circles g

just for the record this would have been my next entry.

my computer shows
c: cabs with the 53 objects.
base2 2188kb cabinet ... 166objects
aspi2dos.sys 35kb system file ...

what i see then is that CABS subfolder is BASE 2 which has the aspi2.dos.

my receipt shows operating system...windows millennium (ME) factory install.
so that it isn't under windows\options\install folder , as it should be ..i
don't have the answer.
thanks for the advise... boni.

Good to see that you're now writing in 'paths' g

Good also, that you've located the BASE2.CAB (containing the aspi2.dos
file).

You only need to point the 'Wizard' to the BASE2.CAB, as the Startup disk
creating utility will itself extract the aspi2.dos file and continue to
create the disk without further intervention.

As you 'appear' (from your receipt) to have an OEM version of WinMe,
remember from one of my earlier replies that *some* OEM's put the
installation files in the windows\options\CABS folder (not the
windows\options\install folder - usually used by MS retail versions of
WinMe).

But from your latest reply, it now looks as though your OEM has decided to
put the CABS folder in the 'root' of the C:\ drive - i.e. C:\CABS

Good luck

Mart
