Default Periodic Hard Disk Access

Recently, I started having a problem with the hard disk running for about one
second every minute or so. This causes annoyances such as the mouse freezing
and the sound player to stutter for that one second. Everything was running
smoothly until I got hit with a bunch of pop-ups and stupid little "helpful"
utilities while Internet Exploring. I uninstalled these useless programs, ran
Ad-Aware to clean up garbage, and defragged C:\.

I must have "un-did" something in the process, or there still is a stupid
little downloaded program in there somewhere that I missed while
uninstalling. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=192926

"CLEAN BOOT -- What it is and why you need it." by MS MVP Gary Terhune
http://grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm

Also:
Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations:
http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe
Unzip to a folder *other than* your Desktop or the Temp folder, double-click
HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or
similar).
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Copy the log files and paste them into a new post at:
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

In your post, please state your problem clearly and what you've done so far to fix
it.

The folks there will tell you what to remove.

See the "housekeeping" they ask you to complete before you post your log:

A tutorial for using Hijack This is located he
http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/
and an in-depth tutorial is he
