Updating Windows98 to XP
I have an old gateway laptop that is still in good shape but I have 98 on it
and nothing works with it. I can't even connect to the internet wirelessly. Is it better to update this computer to XP or to just buy a new laptop? |

Though XP will "function" on older hardware To run XP moderately well you will need at least a 500mhz cpu and 256 -512 megs of RAM or more. BTW: It's probably you will need to add the hardware to connect wirelessly as your laptop may not have the appropriate hardware built in... with that in mind, you might just be better of with a new machine. If you have the right hardware XP should do the job be sure to backup any data you have on the drive and perform a clean install of XP By no means attempt to upgrade a non-functioning win98 installation. For add'l advice please post back with all the specs of your present machine |

Probably better to buy a new laptop with XP. But, lots of luck on finding
one. Almost everything now being sold has Vista - bad news. philo wrote: Upgrade from 98 to XP wrote: I have an old gateway laptop that is still in good shape but I have 98 on it and nothing works with it. Buy a secondhand laptop from a reputable dealer who provides a warranty. XP
will be preinstalled and configured for it. A machine originally supplied with W98 probably won't run XP very well, if at all, and upgrading a laptop to meet XP requirements can be expensive. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Upgrade from 98 to XP" Upgrade from 98 to wrote in message ... No laptop with built-in wifi ever came with win-98. This guy is cracked and not worth the time of day. Or he'd just messing with us. Either way he's a douche bag. What's next? Some ****-head gonna post here that he can't run anything on his Commodore 64? |

It was a Celron 1 ghz with 256 megs of RAM. I upgraded the RAM to 1 gig loaded XP and tweaked it a bit... then gave the machine to my GF... she says it works great |
