Default XP Pro as well as 98SE

I have 98SE + the current AutoPatcher for 98SE + RP7.11 installed on
my P3 600, 256megs, Radeon 7000, DSL internet computer. Everything is
working superbly but I am now thinking of moving up to XP pro because
Avast, the last free AntiVirus software to support 98SE will probably
stop that support in early 2010 + other programs I want to access
especially Paltalk no longer support 98SE. I have a legal WinXP Pro
Corporate SP1 (with key + won't require activation). Can I install
that over my existing 98SE configuration then continue the update
process at Microsoft? Will I retain my exact current 98SE Autopatcher
configuration, including the Vista GUI from RP 7.11 or will my
computer look like XP albeit with all the AutoPatcher improvements. I
have a current Norton Ghost image of my 98SE configuration which works
perfectly, which I can revert to if problems arise. If this is not
feasible, shall I just install XP Pro Corporate SP1 from scratch, then
update from Microsoft or perhaps a dual boot, on my 30gig Maxtor "C"
drive with 98SE + XP Pro? If a dual boot is possible how do I
accomplish this, is there some simple point by point document that
explains how to do this? Just exploring my options. Thanks, Ken.

First increase RAM to at least 512 Mb, preferably 1 Gb. WinXP might
load OK with 256 Mb RAM but you would be disappointed at its speed.

If you are happy with how your computer works now, I would just stick
with it. Your hard drive is kind of small for a dual boot system but
doable and 256 of ram is not really enough for XP to run properly.
The chances of you getting a virus are low due to newer viruses not
being written to attack the 98 system. I would keep your copy of
Avast on your system and active even after the updates cease. I have
AVG on my system and they stopped updates earlier this year and I have
never had a virus. As long as you say you have a viable backup, if in
a long shot you were to encounter a virus, you could easily restore
your system. Just my opinion.

Although it's possible to upgrade win98 to XP...
I highly advise against it...I have never yet seen an upgrade work
well...unless the Win98 system is essentially pristine.

What I recommend is adding a 2nd drive and installing XP there...then
dual booting.

Of course to use XP properly you will really need more RAM...
also helps to do some tweaking...such as setting for best performance.

Note: If you do not want to add another drive...
your present drive...if all one partition...would need to be
non-destructively repartitioned...as XP needs to be installed on it's
own partition...If XP is installed on the same partition as Win98...it
will trash OE5 on your Win98 installation. (and possibly cause other
problems)
