Default Updating Windows98 to XP

While it may be possible to install XP on your hardware, given the cost of
an XP license, the fact you will likely need to add hardware, and that you
will still have an old PC, I believe that the money would be better spent on
a new machine.

Note that some manufacturers still offer XP as an option. For example, Dell
sells several laptops with XP pre-installed for under $500. These tend to
be lower-end computers, but lower-end in 2009 is probably well above any
computer that orginally had windows 98 on it. Look into their "Inspiron
Mini" series.

Be sure to check other major brands, looking for both XP pre-installed and
Vista with "downgrade rights". The latter is a DVD that the manufactures
sells you cheaply, or maybe even tosses into the package, which can convert
the PC from Vista to XP. It can also convert back to Vista, should you ever
wish to do that.

and nothing works with it. I can't even connect to the internet
wirelessly.
Is it better to update this computer to XP or to just buy a new laptop?

Why not just save your personal data, format the harddrive and
reinstall Win98?

I dont use Wifi, but I've been told that Wifi wont work with Win98,
but it will work with Win2000 and up....... Win2000 should run on it.
Win2000 needs much less power than XP.

I have an old laptop with Win2000 on it. Runs fine!

This PC (98lite, 400MHz, 128M) runs wifi fine; initially via a cardbus
card (that eventually gave problems - I think something went wrong with
the cardbus, rather than the card; _very_ odd fault, it would crash if I
tried to send mail via wireless, but only with Turnpike. Everything else
- _receiving_ mail, sending and receiving news, web access), now via a
USB wireless thing. (Actually a Hawking dish, but I'm sure some ordinary
USB wireless sticks work.)
