Default Insufficient Memory

Hi

I have a PC with 2Gig RAM a Pentium Dual Core 3.2G CPU and a 160 Gig hard
drive.

I am trying to install W98 (original, not SE) but on the first reboot during
the install
I get a message on the boot screen that says.

"Insufficient memory to initialize windows.

Quit one or more memory resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities
from
your config.sys and autoexec.bat files and restart.
Press any key to continue."

When I press a key the PC shuts down.

Hopefully someone knows what is happening and can let me know how to fix it.

thanks

Daniel

Just a note regarding the 2nd workaround for the "Insufficient memory to
initialize windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove
unnecessary utilities from your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, and
restart your computer." error message.

The system configuration utiliity cannot be used unless you can bootup
windows. You must know advance that you will have the problem when
increasing your RAM. You must have 512MB or less RAM before that, initiate
the system configuration utility to limit RAM use by windows, verify next
boot, then install more RAM.

The system configuration utility uses the "maxphyspage" entry under the
386Enh section of the system.ini file to limit use of memory by windows.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181862
In my Milleniium OS and 98SE OS, the system configuration utility made this
entry for 512MB windows use limit:
MaxPhysPage=1FFFF
Unless I'm missing something regarding the KB article above, its not
agreeing with those numbers for 512MB in that article.

You should be able to run from a dos prompt (F8 while PC is booting) after
you installed windows. Either edit the system.ini for the MaxPhysPage as I
indicated, OR, MaxFilesCache as indicated by philo's weblink. Either will
work.

If Daniel can just put in 512MB of ram to install and run Win98, no added
lines are needed.

If Daniel wants to use the whole 1GB of ram, he would only need to add the
MaxFileCache=512000 line under the [vcache] header in the System.ini file in
C:\Windows.

If Daniel wants to keep the 2GB of ram in (after installing Win98,possibly
because of dual-booting)) he would then need to add the MaxPhysPage line
(can be done easily under System Config) to limit the amount of usable
physical Ram to 1 GB or less BEFORE adding the extra Ram. Some folks have
had success with using more than 1 GB, but not the majority.

Buffalo

PS: Hopefully, Daniel is installing 98SE and not regular 98 as he will most
likely be having install problems due to the speed of his processor.
