I am trying to set my hotmail account in outlook express. When it tries to

"Payment Required

Configuration:

Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
User name:
Protocol: HTTPMail
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005"

It was working fine some eight months back .
And also account can be reached via hotmail site. Then

Default Hotmail in OE

Free Hotmail accounts are now only accessible using the Web - the paid-for
accounts can, I believe still be accessed via OE, etc..
This policy change was well-advertised some months ago, and emails sent to
every account-holder.

In my own case, the email went thusly......
quote - dated 24/2/5
Dear MSN Member,

Recently, Hotmail(r) announced that in order to improve customer
experience and reduce spam and junk e-mail abuse on MSN(r) services,
Hotmail will no longer allow new e-mail accounts to be accessed via

We are pleased to inform you that because you are an existing and
valued customer, at this time your current Hotmail and MSN
account(s) are exempt from this restriction and you will be able to
continue enjoying access to those accounts from Outlook or Outlook
Express. However, any new Hotmail or MSN accounts you create will
not be accessible via Outlook or Outlook Express.

Because you actively use Outlook or Outlook Express to access one or
more of your MSN Hotmail or MSN e-mail accounts, this could be the
ideal time to consider subscribing to our powerful new e-mail service

Payment means just that, just like the payment you make to your ISP to
access the internet or to purchase your operating system. Running a mail
server costs money however the reason for Hotmail no longer being free to
use with Outlook Express, although web access is still free, is because
this was used as a method to generate spam and spammers don't like paying
to send you their rubbish. If you want to use a web mail service that
also integrates with OE and is currently free, use Gmail from Google.

You have to pay for a Hotmail Plus account now if you want to use it in
Outlook Express. If you already had a free Hotmail account before
September 2004 (I think that's the date) which was set up in OE you were
OK but I believe that is going to end as well soon.

I was told, months ago, that I'd been exempted - so could still use
arthursixpence. After the crash, because I didn't access it for a month, it
got shut down so that was that!...Didn't really matter though as I only
really used it as a spam trap. To that end I still can - after all, if
anyone else adopts that account name I shall consider them plagiarists!

They can.

I technically have an "msn" account rather than a hotmail one, but when the
migrated everything it ended up with three ways to access the account. I still
(I've had this account since 1995) use OE via POP-3 and SMTP. I can also
access it via hotmail.com. And there was an option to have OE access it in via
some HTTP method I didn't entirely understand. I got conflicting comments by
MSN support during the change over which seemed to indicate that an MSN account
could do POP-3/SMTP, but a hotmail one couldn't.

Mike M--- How do you create a GMail account??? When I try, I get the
following:

You cannot log into Gmail using your Google Account username and password.
Gmail is in a limited test period and is only available to a small number of
people who are helping test and improve the service before it is made more
widely available. If you have been asked to test Gmail and have not yet
created a Gmail account, please click on the link in your invitation email.

I had the email Noel mentioned and my account is still active in OE but as
I only use it for the ng's and a few of the Hotmail newsletters the only
thing that seems to come into it are always in the Bulk Mail folder. I'm
sure I read it somewhere though that even this would stop at some point
unless I went for the paid version.

That change was announced months ago.
You can still use the web server for Hotmail free.
That's why I refuse to use Hotmail.
