This sounds like a bios problem rather than the operating system.

anybody suggest anything?

Try and borrow another keyboard. Preferably PS2 rather than USB. If you
are using a USB keyboard the problem might be because you haven't enabled
USB Legacy support in the bios meaning that the keyboard is unusable until
the system loads.

What is the EXACT message you see when asked to press either F2 or enter?
It is just possible that your problem is due to the battery on your
motherboard failing and the CMOS losing the settings used by your bios.
If this is the cause then the cure is to replace the battery.

I get no response from pressing f2 or enter it just hangs
The message says "press f2 to enter BIOS or del to enter CMOS"
Is this a battery problem

Well it's your bios talking to you and there has to be a reason. This has
nothing to do with the operating system you have installed. I think it
quite likely that your problem is due to a failed or failing motherboard
battery as this will cause the CMOS to lose its data when the machine is
turned off, meaning that the bios has to redetect your hardware including
your hard disk, keyboard and mouse before it can proceed. I'm uncertain
however as to why pressing F2 doesn't access the bios given that you are
using a PS2 keyboard.
