scandisk want to run a surface scan at almost every boot
Monday Morn
During bootup scandisk informs me of need to run a thorough suface scan. I sometimes let it do this: takes nearly 3 hours. And after a couple of boots, it wants to do it again. Nothing is wrong with the drives. How do I manually reset the scandisk flag? J |

Good thought, but no cigar.
I have read many messages about this problem. None had info about resetting the flag. Strange but true. Thank you for your reply. Try Start Run and enter Msconfig. Under General select Advanced. Check "disable Scandisk after bad shutdown" Reboot, then go back and un-check it. Keep it un-checked. That may remove the flag. The two "dirty" flags are located at the start of the FAT for each volume.

scandisk want to run a surface scan at almost every boot
"Bill Blanton" wrote in message ... The two "dirty" flags are located at the start of the FAT for each volume. So, this means there is no way to manually reset them? I want scandisk to run if needed to fix the file structure. The problem is scandisk wants to run a surface scan on the 2nd disk. This is a 38 gig disk. It worked without problems for months. And even when I allow scandisk to complete a surface scan, it does not fix it for next boot. I have used disk utilities to verify the soundness of the drive. J "Bill Watt" wrote in message ... The only way I know of is with a disk editor. I want scandisk to run if needed to fix the file structure. Agree. The problem is scandisk wants to run a surface scan on the 2nd disk. This is a 38 gig disk. It worked without problems for months. Mabey the drive isn't as healthy as it appears. There are two flags. One is the "ClnShutBitMask" wich indicates that the volume was not properly dismounted and will run a scnadisk standard scan. The other, which is what is afflicting you, is the "HrdErrBitMask", which indicates that the file system driver had a problem writing to one or more sectors. And even when I allow scandisk to complete a surface scan, it does not fix it for next boot. That is overall strange..What happens if after scandisk runs, instead of letting windows load, you immediately reboot/reset? Does it want to run then? If so, I would guess that it isn't clearing the flags. |

J Snip Bill Blanton has supplied meaningful information, as usual. Usually a full scan should clear it up but you have done that several times. It seems a clean shutdown should also do it. What may not be the norm here is that the problem is on the second drive. It would be worth trying to run Scandisk and a full scan on both drives from Windows. Although Scandisk is more powerful in Dos I would try it. Whatever installed the flag needs to remove it. Not the reason for doing it, but it may run faster in windows.
