Default Scandisk Error

I know I'm not supposed to do this, but I shut down my Windows 98 computer via the main power button because I was in a hurry. The next time I started my computer the Microsoft scandisk utility started up and it always stops at 26 percent completed. I also get an error message, "error reading cluster 138........". Is there any way to bypass the scandisk utility? It just sits there for the longest time and I obviously cannot logon to Windows.
