Default Defragmenting

I have Windows 98SE. I am attempting to use Maintenance Wizard. I will run
thru Disk Cleanup and Scan Disk fine, but the Defragmenting part of the
process seems to get stuck at 10%. I have had it running over night and still
all I get is 10%. Sometime I will see message file changed starting over. I
am getting message that my C drive doesn't have room for much of anything to
I think I 'm on the right track but defrag seems stuck. Any idea would be
great.

Default Defragmenting

if defrag restarts, something is writing to the disk
my paranoia screams virus.spyware
but it can be any of hundreds utility programs that are set to start at boot
(many of which really shouldnt)
use ctrl-alt-del to find what is running,
then use each programs shut down to close it down
till defrag runs as it should
or restart in safe mode, but defrag will run slowly

consider installing windows ME defrag, it is ridiculously faster than
windows98 or 98SE

Default Defragmenting

See my article, "Clean Boot -- What it is and why you need it", first link
in my signature. Stop using Maintenance Manager entirely.

A word about Defrag's "10%"... When Defrag starts, the first thing it does
is check the disk integrity. It then processes the data from APPLOG (which
is derived from Task Monitor), to figure out how to optimize the positioning
of the most-used system modules. Finally, it actually starts to defrag.
During this entire set of procedures, the progress bar says 10%. Then it
sits there, not moving, until the actual progress of defragmentation reaches
10%, at which point the progress bar starts showing actual progress.

Yes, Windows ME (Millenium Edition) defrag is much faster and less likely to
restart if something else happens on the system. However, I don't know
anywhere you can get it that I can recommend. Maybe you know someone with
Windows ME? In any case, if you can get hold of that version of DEFRAG.EXE,
just replace your existing version with that one.

Have you tried running it in Safe Mode to see if it is any different?
