Formatted C: and tried to reinstall - don't have product key :( HELP!
Hi,
I was helping a friend (or so they thought) and formatted the hard drive on an old laptop of theirs before they were sending it to Sierra Leone. I managed to format the drive, and created a boot disk and have got it to the final stage of re-installing Windows98, however I need the product key apparently and my friend doesn't have it. Does anyone have any ideas? We wanted to send this machine out to help people but without a working version of windows it's near useless. If you have any suggestions we'd really appreciate it. thanks, s |

I'm fairly certain that you can call Microsoft and get a replacement Key,
especially under these circumstances. But I don't know for sure what number to call. If someone doesn't come along soon to provide the number, I'll see what I can do to locate it. What make/model laptop is it? And what does the Windows CD look like. What is written on the CD? One last option, if all else fails, is to purchase an OEM CD, provided your machine will install such and doesn't need special changes to the OS (some laptops are *very* finicky, especially the older ones). OEM Win98 CDs are ~$50 -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User http://grystmill.com/articles/cleanboot.htm http://grystmill.com/articles/security.htm wrote in message ups.com... 1 800 642-7676 but I don't know if MS will issue one since W98 support has
ended. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, but for this purpose, and with some
real negotiating skills, I think I could make a case, g. -- Gary S.
