Default HDD doesn't show in My Computer

Win 98 SE; IE 6

I added a second HDD to the system and whether I set it up as a primary
slave or secondary master (yes it's jumpered right; AFAIK) it shows on one
of the POST screens, it shows in Device Manager (working properly), but does
not show in My Computer. Add New Hardware wizard doesn't detect anything
new.

Belarc and Everest both show it.

It's a used Samsung. The only number on it is VG34323A; nothing on Samsungs
site.

Any ideas?
Thanks

The first thing you have to do with a new HD is to partition it. You then
have to format the partitions. For the former, you usually use FDISK. Are
you just going to use this disk for additional file storage? Or are you
going to install another operating system?

Partition and format..... Oh crap! I knew that too, Gary. Forgive a senior
moment, please.
All is OK with this HDD now. Thanks. It will be used for the page file,
various temp folders, and backups.

Suggest you make the entire disk one big Extended Partition and then
sub-divide that into separate partitions for page, temp, backups and perhaps
miscellaneous storage. Make the paging partition the first one, TEMP second.

Instead of fooling with a partition for the swap file, why don't you
increase the amount of ram so that the swap file is not even used. That's
how you speed up a PC's operation. Have you monitored the swap file usage
on the PC?

This is a 9 yr. old second PC that I use now for learning things, like
partitioning. I can and plan to add more RAM. I can add another 128 MB which
will max the RAM at 384 MB.

No, I've not actually monitored that swap file usage but I wanted to do this
partitioning anyway.

With 256 mb, you may well have enough ram already and adding more ram than
you use in a typical computer session will not accomplish anything. As long
as you are experimenting with things, suggest you take a look at swap file
usage using the system monitor (SYSMON.EXE). Also, fdisk is very limited in
its ability to partition--it can only create and delete. If you like having
partitions, you will find that your partition needs frequently change--maybe
you want more or less partitions, you may need to adjust the sizes, etc.
This is when you need a partitioning program such as:

BootIt Next Generation is available from: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/
and it does partitioning, makes a compressed image, does many other
partitioning chores and is a boot manager. It is not quite as easy to use
as Partition Magic but it is half the cost and has more features. Unlike
the crippled PMagic demo, BING is a *full function* demo you can try for
FREE for 30 days. The web site has a lot of support articles.
