Overwrite Folders
Had been having trouble with IE error messages for my
msvcrt.dll file. Tech from MS send me file to download to overwrite my existing msvcrt.dll. My question is how do I overwrite this? I found that I have 2 msvcrt folders. One is in C/WINDOWS and the other is C/ProgramFiles. Now I have the one he sent me as well. How do I then use his folder to overwrite the other two? I am not to technical so please be specific. I am a trucker not a computer expert. Thanks. |

Just a correction, msvcrt.dll is a file, not a folder.
Anyway, thats neither here nor there. Assuming the file you were sent, was in a .zip file, download ZipCentral (http://zipcentral.iscool.net - freeware) if you do not already have an archive manager. First boot to Safe Mode; 1. Re-start your computer 2. Press F8 when it says "Starting Windows .." 3. Select "Safe Mode" Once in Safe Mode; 1. Go to Start Run 2. Type regsvr32 /u msvcrt.dll 3. Use ZipCentral to extract the file to c:\windows\ Go back to Start Run, and type; regsvr32 msvcrt.dll Re-boot your computer........ -- Regards Steven Burn Ur I.T. Hi Jeff again, the MS Tech told be to save the attachment
he sent to my desktop (which I did) and then go to safe mode then My Computer, to show all files and folders, type msvcrt.dll in named text bar, choose C Drive ,Look and Find now.The result shown in pane below now shows 3 of them including the 1 he sent me.He said remember the folder which contains the folder he sent me and use the mscvrt.dll on my desktop to overwrite all of them if more than one. I was able to follow all these steps until I got to this point. Three mscvrt.dll show on the pane. Two of them say C/WINDOWS and another says C/ProgramFiles. One he sent me is in C/WINDOWS. I don't know what a Zip File is. I am ready to throw this out the window. I even had my computer supposedly repaired and my IE encountered a problem keeps popping up and not able to get in most websites. Please help and thanks to Steven Burn. -----Original Message----- Just a correction, msvcrt.dll is a file, not a folder. Anyway, thats neither here nor there. Oks, follow the steps below in *Safe Mode*
1. Locate the msvcrt.dll file you were sent 2. Right click it and select "Properties" 3. Click the "Version" tab Note the "File version" number down in Notepad or something (start run, type: notepad ) 4. Go to Start Find Files or Folders 5. Do a search for msvcrt.dll (as you did before) 6. Right click the one located in C:\WINDOWS\ and follow steps 2 & 3 (see above) to get the version number If the "File version" of the copy located in C:\WINDOWS is _OLDER_ than the one you were sent, follow the steps below, otherwise, ignore the one you were sent To overwrite the one in C:\WINDOWS\; 7. Go to Start Run, type; regsvr32 /u msvcrt.dll This will un-register your current copy of the file. 8. Copy the msvcrt.dll file you were sent, to the C:\WINDOWS folder 9. Go to Start Run, type; regsvr32 msvcrt.dll As we are registering the file, you do not need to include the /u switch in the above command. 10. Re-start your computer If you continue to have problems, just ignore the file you were sent and restore the original copy of the file; To restore the original copy of the file, boot into Safe Mode again, and follow the steps below; 1. Go to Start Run 2. Type; sfc 3. Select "Extract one file from installation disk" 4. Click "Browse" and in the "Filename" box, type; c:\windows\msvcrt.dll 5. Click OK, then click Next 6. Insert your Windows CD into your CD-Rom drive 7. In the "Restore From" box, type; D:\WIN98 Where D is your CD-Rom drive letter 8. In the "Save file in" box, type; c:\windows 9. Click OK -- Regards Steven Burn Ur I.T. Mate Group www.it-mate.co.uk Keeping it FREE! wrote in message ...
