Content.IE5
Can anyone tell me what C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 folder is specifically used for? I know Temporary Internet Files contains cookies. I got the following virus: C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\EFUKV81H\HP1[1].CHM=/hp1.htm Infected VBS.Trojan.Psyme.W - I could not disinfect, quarantine, delete or rename it through bitdefender professional v 7.2. I couldn't find it individually with a search, so I had to delete all the files in the folder through explorer I was wondering just exactly what i deleted. It looked like mostly a lot pictures, but i wanted to know a little more about what was in there. Me |

The Temporary Internet Files (TIF) do not contain your cookies, by default
these are located in C:\Windows\Cookies but appear in your TIF when viewed using Windows Explorer due to a little bit of "Windows Magic". The Temporary Internet Files are just that, temporary files downloaded when browsing the net such as the files that make up each web page you view. The folder is also used to contain temporary files used by Outlook Express when viewing messages and also Help & Support. These latter files cannot be viewed using Windows Explorer. To "see" them you would need to use the DIR command from a DOS prompt. The TIF stores its files in folders each having an eight character randomly generated name. These folders are generated four at a time and each set of four folders is usually limited to a total of 50MB of files. These folders are sub-folders of the Content.IE5 folder. The space allocated to the TIF together with its location is controlled using the Control Panel applet Internet Options. On the General tab you will find a button labelled Settings using which you can relocate your TIF and also adjust the space allocated to the folders. You will also find there a second button and perhaps a third button depending on the version of Internet Explorer you are using. Using those buttons you can delete both the contents of the TIF and also your cookies. When deleting the contents I would advise you to check the box to Delete all Offline content as this will then also delete the temporary files created by say Outlook Express. I am surprised your AV application could not delete a file in the TIF. Most can do so. Perhaps it was running at the time in which case you could have rebooted to Safe Mode and then scanned again. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Me wrote: Can anyone tell me what C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 folder is specifically used for? My Content.IE5 folder contains about forty separate
folders with thousands of files in each. When i use the Control Panel applet Internet Options to delete temporary internet files it does not go into these folders and delete any of them. Is it supposed to? Should i do this manually or leave it alone? I do not use Outlook Express. Me |
