Default Help! Boot to DOS prompt automatically!

My friend accidentially delete some files (name unknown)
at C:\ while he is trying to do the tidy up (recycle bin
emptied). His machine now cannot boot GUI but to DOS
directly. Same results for Safe Mode and Step-by-step
confirmation. His machine has configured to use
Drivespace (from Windows) to increase disk space so when
he boot up with floopy and want to run setup at Win98 CD
to overwrite/fix it, the setup prompt that "some
compression has been working in C:\, setup cannot be
continue".

So the question is, of course, what can be done to bring
the Win98 back online?

Many thx in advance!!!!

Can he type WIN to get into Windows? Or can he
navigate/type the direct path?:

C:\Windows\Win.com

If that won't work he may have to reformat if a setup over
the present one wont work, especially since SFC (System File
Checker) may not be available.

If he has a floppy drive and any floppy disks he may want to
back up any files that are possible before reformating.

If his HDD is big enough, he may want to FDISK and create
multiple partitions to help protect the data, that way
should the HDD still be viable, he only needs to worry about
formatting the C drive.

Thx pal.

He has tried typing "win" or "exit" at C:\ but nothing=20
happens - only skip into another line of C:\.
The win.com is still exist though.

Any other ideas for this situation?

Thx again!
