Default about preventing writes to ReadOnly-files

One would think so, but are you saying when the OS is up and
running, malware can overwrite RO, H and S files and nothing
will stop it?

yup. and any application can ask the os to change the
attributes on any file, without telling you.

I guess one could change Windows so it, besides ignores every
try to write to a RO file, allso pops up a system dialog box
when any program try to change any RO-attributes (that would mean
you would get an extra OK/cancel dialog if you change attributes
with any file manager application though)...
Any kind of program that needs direct disk access, like a
disk defragmenter would stop working.
Assuming you are expanding win98's dos with this feature too
would it be possible? (assuming the operating system files
and much of registry is RO)

Currently if you run dos programs that do direct disk access, I
think it is prevented by hanging that program and give a message
about need to run some special command before I think... not sure.

I guess one could verify that all disk writes isn't writing where
a directory is (and if so, if any attribute-bytes bit 0 isn't changed)

As long as it is NOT anything like hasta-la-vistas
UAC-screens, I guess it's an idea that could be tested.
(they are only irritating and the users just say yes to any
questions anyway. it was designed to annoy people into buying
new software but instead everyone just turn it off)
