Default iosubsys problem

Sorry Noel, but I'm back. I've been installing various drivers for the vid
card all afternoon, including ones that I know have worked in the past, but
as soon as I install a driver and reboot, the blue screen is back and I
can't boot normally. I then have to go in thru safe mode, delete the
driver, and then I can reboot in normal mode but I'm then stuck with VGA.
Any idea what I should try next? As you can tell, I am lost.

Hmm - could be the INF file itself has got corrupted/changed (or it's now
installing the wrong version of the file)

Try installing these ones - you've had the Catalyst set
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27

To install them, Boot to Safe Mode, then Remove the existing drivers from
Device manager, and on the reboot to normal mode, force an install of the
default VGA drivers - then run the installer

Try downloading and running the Catalyst uninstaller
(https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206...ninstaller.exe)
as it is just possible that the problem is caused by a file that is not
being deleted when you uninstall the drivers and is sticking around and
causing problems when you load new drivers.

Hi Noel;
Do you mean I should remove "Standard Display Adapter(VGA)"? It's the
only entry I have under display adapters in device manager.

Ah - that's the one that you need to be present when installing the Catalyst
or std driverset from ATI.
go straight to the install after running the removal tool (see Mike's post)

Default iosubsys problem

Hi Noel;
I've tried every ATI driver with varying vcache and swapfile values, using
the uninstall too in between. I just have several questions and then I'll
leave you alone.
Since the iosubsys files are system files, is there anywhere that Me keeps
backup copies? Would they possibly have been corrupted, too, from all the
install attempts I've made?
If I re-install Me or upgrade the Me installed on C to XP, would it bring
in new, valid iosubsys files or would it holdover the old corrupted files?
I've been moving everything I can off of my C drive. Does this sound like
a case of reformat/re-install? Can I re-install Me when I have XP resident
on another drive or will I have to disconnect the 2nd drive from the system
first?
Thanks, again, for all your help.

George
It's unlikely (but not impossible) that the iosubsys files would be
corrupted - 6 of them are covered by System File Protection, while the
others are not.
New copies can be extracted from the CAB files (in C:\Windows\Options) in
the usual manner, using MSCONFIG (note that the files covered by SFP will
require booting to DOS - [or XP] - for replacement).

Will reinstalling ME over the top cure the problem? I don't honestly know.
If you are dual-booting ME and XP at present, then you may well encounter
problems with entering XP afterwards, depending on the boot manager you use.
and will have to use the fixboot/fixmbr utilities from the XP disk.

Will installing XP over the top work? - probably, since the driver-set is
different, and there is no hold-over code. Note that there may be other
problems that surface in such cases - which is why it's never a good idea to
attempt 'fix by upgrade'.

Default iosubsys problem

George asked :-

keeps
backup copies?

Most are held as 'originals' in the CAB files in one of the WINDOWS\OPTIONS
sub-folders (as per your WinMe CD).

However, just a WAG, but earlier Noel mentioned :-

Hmm - could be the INF file itself has got corrupted/changed

There *may* still be a 'faulty' .inf file associated with your ATI driver,
lurking in the \INF\OTHER folder which didn't get deleted when you removed
the drivers. (This issue seems to bring back some old and painful memories
regarding these 'other' .inf files).

(or it's now installing the wrong version of the file)

"Removing" drivers - even in Safe Mode - doesn't always remove everything
g

Might be worth confirming and deleting/renaming this (and/or any other ATI
driver files still on your WinMe partition) before you try re-installing the
video drivers again. Also, a couple re-boots between removing and
re-installing drivers and then re-searching, may help 'flush' the more
stubborn files.

Best of luck

Mart

Default iosubsys problem - addendum

BTW - If you do find an associated .inf file in the \INF\OTHER folder, there
*might* even be a further associated .pnf (Windows Precompiled Setup
Information) file which was generated whilst installing the driver, in the
the \INF folder. If so, this may also need renaming/deleting.
