WiFi USB for ME
Ok I have a Toshiba 1715xcds Satellite with ME. I decided to try and use wifi
on it, so I contacted a firm explained what I had and ordered a Sabrent USB 2.0 802.11n adapter. On receipt and on install I find that it is not compatible with the ME operating system. On calling I find that since ME is no longer supported by Microsoft there are no drivers for this or any other such units. And Im recommended to change the operating system to XP, whereas the folks at Toshiba suggest one not do so as it will not operate properly and may not be able to get all the drivers et al to work properly in the laptop once XP is installed wiping the drive. So looks like I can not make the laptop wifi due to ME? Add to this I just ordered a Dlink DIR 655 for my in house network which has cable internet (Comcast). Unless someone can tell me how I can make this USB wifi unit work with the ME laptop,Ive got a big paperwight in the form of my Satellite laptop. I dont want to endure problems if moving to XP is going to cause yet more Tch headaches with the laptop versus ditching the unit and buying a new one! |

You need to find an adapter with ME compatible software. The best place is an
independent computer repair shop since the big box stores get rid of their stock quickly. Even if your computer is only USB 1.1 a 2.0 (2.4 GHz) will work as an external "fixture". This might look awkward, but is better than a paperweight + dialup. -- I mastered Wordstar graphics! "Perplexed" wrote: Ok I have a Toshiba 1715xcds Satellite with ME. I appreciate your feedback, circumstances have changed. The reason I needed my
laptop now to be wifi is because I am now bedridden and can not get to my computer room. Making the laptop wifi capable would allow me under these circumstances to access to my emails, files etc. Of course I note the Dlink 655 will work as well with g and N. But the techs made it clear to me that "no adapter" would work due to non support drivers for the ME. You are stating that a g adapter might work.....assumedly they checked all variances that support ME and came up with 0 "Mike M" wrote: On calling I find that since ME is no longer supported by Microsoft there are no drivers for this or any other such units. That isn't strictly true. I doubt that you will find a usb wi-fi adapter that supports 802.11n that can be used with Win Me however there are usb 802.11g adapters that work with Win Me. The problem however is locating one of these. Ive got a big paperwight in the form of my Satellite laptop. I have to ask was it a paperweight the day before you bought the non functioning wi-fi n adapter? If not then what has changed that makes it OK one day and not the next? I appreciate that not being able to connect using wi-fi is an inconvenience but is it any worse than before you bought the adapter? -- Mike Maltby Perplexed wrote: Ok I have a Toshiba 1715xcds Satellite with ME. the techs made it clear to me that "no adapter" would work due to non
support drivers for the ME. The simple truth is that they lie. They probably mean that no wifi adapter currently produced by DLink supports Win Me. -- Mike Maltby Perplexed wrote: I appreciate your feedback, circumstances have changed. I didn't catch the start of this, so if these have already been mentioned,
sorry for wasting your time. "Perplexed" wrote in message ... But the techs made it clear to me that "no adapter" would work due to non support drivers for the ME. This one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-335-_-Product claims to have support for Windows all the way back to 98SE. I just looked up the specs on that machine. It says you have two USB ports, but doesn't say what generation they are. Perhaps your "techs" are complaining that the ports are 1.0 or 1.1 or that they can't get drivers to support them at 2.0 data rates for ME. However, the specs on the above adapter http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/USB300M Minimum Requirements 200 MHz or Faster Processor 64 MB RAM Recommended Available USB Port (USB 2.0 for maximum throughput) CD-ROM Drive Windows 98/ME/2000/XP Mac OS X 10.5 are all well within the limits of your laptop. ----- I note the machine also has Card Bus slots. I have two rather old laptops here running ME and both are using this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...110&Tpk=wpc54G for their Wi-Fi adapters. - Bill |
