Default WinMe - External USB HD

Can a 500GB External USB hard disk
work with WinMe os (256MB memory)?
Any advice would be appreciated?
Thanks.

Possibly, because it is USB rather than ATAPI. No matter what the hardware I
wouldn't expect any 9x version to work satisfactorily above 127GB on an IDE
hard disk, but maybe external USB, I don't know. I'd be interested to try it
(if I still had a Win ME installation set up!).

However, assuming the computer does not have USB 2.0 support, I think a
500GB disk even if it did work would be so very slow as to be untenable. So
a USB 2.0 PCI card would be a practical necessity.

You may also be able to find drivers for the specific chipset that will get
you 2.0 support.

My old ME machine ran the USB ports at 1.1 data rates when originally
installed. But the chipset on the motherboard were actually 2.0. After I
loaded the chipset specific drivers from the vendor they worked at 2.0 data
rates.

I have a Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.O card
installed. It seems ok.
