34 MB does seem a lot to take in one sitting. But I see my Alwil
Software folder is about 148 MB huge.

OK, good to know -- but I'm glad I haven't had to do this yet that
way!

The McAfee daily update .zip files are around 66M.

That's even worse, but it doesn't work for Win98 anymore anyhow. Here's
my actual avast! file as of yesterday...

I don't use it as my primary AV (in fact I don't use that machine online
any more), but it seems to accept the data files. The .exe installer for
them doesn't seem to work any more - I have to unzip the four data files
(.dat, IIRR) from the .zip manually, replacing the ones present - but
last time I ran McAfee, which was sometime last year, it ran OK, using a
fairly recent set of files unzipped in that manner. (At least, it gave
the impression of running, and didn't complain that the data files were
unusable; it didn't find anything.)

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATAdir *.vps
Directory of C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA

I did the McAfee manual updates myself for a while, but my recollection
is that it too ultimately failed to function. Can it be the site I was
using no longer offered them? Can it be the format changed? I don't
recall the details!

I think the command to extract the McAfee defs manually was...

Superdat.exe /e

Then, the files had to be put where they belonged. (Or did I do it that
way?) But I'm not sure what ultimately went wrong -- I just can't
recall! Did I get a message that the files were bad?

Anyhow, I'm still fairly happy with the switch to avast!.

Can I ask why you pussies are continuing this anti-virus thread for so
long?

I've posted links to where you can download Norton Anti-virus 2002 for
FREE, which IS COMPATIBLE with windows 98 and for which you can still
download functional virus definition files FOR FREE.

And I still shake my head and wonder why you PUSSIES are so paranoid
about viruses and win-98 in the first place - given that you probably
haven't seen a virus on your systems for years (and you pussies are
probably on dial-up anyways) ...

I can't remember the /e switch; certainly, the autoinstall was indeed
superdat.exe. I have been downloading a .zip file, which contains the
data (.dat IIRR) files as well as some others.

Then, the files had to be put where they belonged. (Or did I do it that
way?) But I'm not sure what ultimately went wrong -- I just can't

IIRR, the superdat started to say it couldn't find a valid installation.

Anyhow, I'm still fairly happy with the switch to avast!.

I was happy with the switch to AVG (which I did years ago - I just kept
getting the McAfee .zip files out of curiosity, I think). Unfortunately,
I didn't turn off AVG's autoupdate in time to stop the final "update"
that just pops up every time the machine runs a banner about updating,
TWICE (and only when you run things), which if course you can't. I
really ought to get round to uninstalling it.

(I use AVIRA on here - don't know if that runs under '9x, I think not.)

You can ask, if it makes you feel good (-:!

I'm not paranoid, or even worried - I'd be most surprised if I ever got
a virus on that machine. But there is such a thing as intellectual
curiosity: some of us like to see how long we can keep some things
going. It's a bit like keeping an old car or other piece of machinery
going - as a sort of hobby, even though it's not as efficient as a
modern one. In fact I assume it's the case for the vast majority of
those continuing to play with '9x: I very much doubt they are using it
as their primary system.

Not that there aren't some: I have a friend who uses '98, his main
activities being genealogy and transferring his LPs to CD. He is on
dialup, doesn't use the web (not IMO something you can do on dialup
these days), only email. AFAICR he has no AV at all.
