Default Display problems with win ME

I recently reformatted my hard drive because of numerous
error messages and display problems. After I
reformatted, the display is only 16 colors. I have tried
updating the drivers from the manufacturer but when I
install them the computer restarts, and won't boot. I
have to then go into safe mode to uninstall the drivers
and I have to start all over again. Also, I have tried
to install updated drivers for the chipset and get an
error message box that says "SURegCreateKey failed", what
the heck does that mean and how do I correct it?
oh, and I have also checked windows update for drivers
and there are none.

The SURegCreateKey failed error is usually the result of having some other
application running that is preventing the registry from being modified. (Ref
KB305668 - ""SURegCreateKey Failed" Error Message Appears When Installing a
Program" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=305668)).

What graphics card do you have and which driver version are you trying to
install?

Where I am attempting to get the drivers from is the
manufacturer of the motherboard: http://www.biostar-
usa.com/mbdownloads.asp?model=m7vkl I have tried all of
the drivers for winME and 9x to no avail. When I attempt
to install them in safe mode, the computer will not boot
up normally.

Thanks for the help

There are 3 sets of drivers and a bios flash there.

does the BIOS flash install ? (if you didn't, don't yet)

does the VIA Hyperions install ?
does the Sound driver install ?
does the graphics drivers install ?

Are you using the on-board graphics or a separate card?
Either way is the on-board stuff enabled/disabled in the BIOS as
appropriate?

I did not try the BIOS one (I was afraid I'd screw
something up)
The video and graphics are both onboard.
The audio drivers (for ME) installed successfully.
The Via Hyperion is the one that gives me the error
message (SURegCreatKey Failure) I have tried installing it
in safe mode, to no avail (the pc will not boot normally,
and I have to un install it).
The video drivers install, but after the pc is rebooted,
it will not boot normally also. I have tried both the
drivers for ME and 9X.

Looks like your registry may have been corrupted by something or other.
Boot to DOS using a WindowsME floppy bootdisk, and type

A:\ SCANREG /FIX

Then give a shot at the Hyperions.

I got the Hyperions to load finally, but I still cannot
get hte drivers to install. I think perhaps they are not
the correct ones, but alas, they are the only ones I can
find for the onboard video for that motherboard. Any
suggestions on where I may find another source?

Try the drivers from the mother-site, at
http://www.biostar.com.tw/support/dr...hp3?name=M7VKL
(which gives an S3 ProSavage as the video drivers)

So the point we're at now is everything's fine except the video-drivers.
A look at VIA's site is a bit confusing as to what chipset you have...
the VKL0302F seems to be VIA KL chipset, but the graphics
driver/northbridge you have seem to be for the KN. And, according to VIA
some of their KL series use a different northbridge. You're right in
that the driverset on Biostar's website doesn't seem to be for your
machine, but they're the ones who put the thing together so they should
know... arrrrggggghhh.

First, I'd check the BIOS that all the video settings are kosher
(default VGA = on-board(legacy), other settings in keeping with Owner's
Manual for the motherboard).

Did the original drivers on the CD that came with the motherboard work?
