Default Can't preview jpegs

I feel like one of the users I have cursed in the past. While folling around
in Windows Explorer on the View/Folder Options/File Types screen I accidentally
(apparently) deleted an entry linking Internet Explorer to jpeg files (.jpg and
..jpeg). As a result, when I select a jpeg file as my wallpaper it doesn't
display. Windows allows it to be selected, but it doesn't display in the
preview window of the Desktop Properties screen or on the desktop itself.
Also, when viewing a folder as a web page, the preview function doesn't work
for jpeg files. Wallpaper and preview both work for bitmaps, however.

So, can someone tell me what I did, so I make sure not to do it again? And
also, how do I fix this and get my system back to normal?

Thanks in advance for any help.

It is setup as you suggested. I have to have Active Desktop in order to use
jpg files for wallpaper, and view as web page to preview.

I should have been clearer in my response. The computer was ALREADY set up the
way you suggested, so no, it didn't work.

When in the View/Folder Options/File Types screen, there used to be an entry fo
Internet Explorer linking to jpeg files. There was also one to Mozilla, but
the IE link seemed to take precedence. The IE entry is gone, and now the
preview function doesn't work for files with the extension .jpg or .jpeg. It
still works for bitmaps, however. Jpeg files also don't display when selected
as wallpaper.

Somehow, I need to reestablish that IE link, and can't find any documentation
on how to do so.

thanks,
Paul

Ok, this is too weird.

Immediately after posting my last message, I tried selecting a jpg file as my
wallpaper, WITHOUT MAKING ANY CHANGES TO THE SYSTEM (!!!). You can imagine my
surprise when it worked!

I had been looking around in the View/Folder Options/File Types window of
Windows Explorer, but had been very careful to not make any changes, cancelling
even when I hadn't done anything but view.

At any rate, all the normal functionality that was gone has returned, and I
have no idea why, where it went when it was gone, or what happened to make it
come back, other than the fact that I left the computer alone for a couple of
hours while I went to lunch and the bookstore.

I guess I'll just add it to my list of Windows mysteries.

Thanks for your assistance.

Paul

Are you talking about the small preview in the left bar?
JPGs are not supported by Windows 98. Some files, which
have the extension .JPEG are supported, but JPGs aren't
supported in the Web and Miniatures views.

Windows 98 SUPPORTS JPGs. I'm sorry. I only discovered
that after reading the following:

(A reply from Andrew H. Carter about a problem simmilar to this.)

Proceed as described in the article quoted by Andrew.
