Default Help with Windows Update

Whenever I run Windows Millennium Edition Updates, I receive a "Recommended
Update"
of Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1. But, when I attempt the install,
it FAILS. Repeatedly! I don't understand...

Error message is: "The following items failed to install. To try installing
them again, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now
again."

What's up with that? Any way to work around it?

The .NET Framework 1.1 update is very large, so confirm that you have lots
of free space on C:. Greater than 1 GB may be needed.
Run Disk Cleanup, and then manually confirm that the Program
Files\WindowsUpdates\V4\Temp foler is empty. Ditto for Windows\Temp.
Then run Defrag to clear lots of contiguous free space on C:.
Reboot to a lean machine, running nothing else, and reattempt the update.

Thank you for your reply. I really don't want any .NET Framework files on
this machine. How can I delete previous installations and free up that
space?

Is the Framework visible in Add-Remove Programs?
If so, uninstall it there.

Yes, "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1" is visible in add/remove programs.
Curiously, it is the only reference to .NET Framework visible. When I
remove it, Windows Update asked me to install it again.

What's up with that? Is there another earlier NET Framework hidden on my
machine or something?

While Framework 1.1 is the upgrade to the earlier version. 1.0, I doubt the
earlier version is now installed on your machine.
Just ignore the WU offers to install 1.1 or use the Personalize wizard, on
the left side of the Update window, to hide it for now.

I think I will hide it. Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't notice that
feature until you mentioned it!
