I am having big problems with my Win 98 SE PC having the resources sucked
out of it. Right now, according to the Resource Meter, it is:

System Resources: 32%
User Resources: 32%
GDI Resources: 63%

I usually have to reboot in order to get it back up. Usually, I'm running
Outlook, Outlook Express, and maybe a couple of IE windows. I have 256 RAM.

I don't know what to tweak in order to fix this problem. Here's what is in

You seem to have a LOT of stuff in there!!! You can (with prudence)
selectively uncheck each of the fluffy ones in there, one by one, to find
out which ones are the real hogs.

Why are you even running some of those in the startup, like (for example) Dr
Watson? I don't know what the APC thing is, and Norton can be a bit of a
hog too.

Let's see if some others can weigh in with more specifics.

OK, I should have done this before bothering this group ... I found a cool
website (http://answersthatwork.com/) that explains almost everything that
was on my list. I removed 6 from my startup:

loadqm.exe
NvMcTray.dll
taskmon.exe
TeaTimer.exe
OSA9.exe
DRWATSON.EXE

I could remove the Resource Meter because it takes up resources also, but
I've gotten to where I keep an eye on it to see if I need to reboot.

We'll see if removing these improves my performance.

I still would like to know if there is some other tweaking I could do.

Glad you found something to help steer you through the resolution of
this problem. My comments for whatever they're worth are;
1) You appear to be running two AV programs, one of which is an known
resource hog as Richard Harper indicated. As long as you using
Grisoft, you do not require Norton. Disable it and watch the
improvement.
2) I note you have removed from your STARTUP Microsoft Office. I don't
know if this automatically stops the known resource hog FIND FAST, or
if it must be disabled separately . Maybe someone with knowledge will
chime in.

I agree - get rid of Norton, and Find Fast (that is probably in Control
Panel).

APC is American Power Conversion, sellers of UPS's.
Power Chute is there system power monitor which kicks in if power is =
lost. Can also shutdown after set amount of minutes of power loss and =
then restart when power is regained, supposedly without loss of data.

I think you've done a good, good start, (but I like DrWatson). I don't
know what a bunch of those are. I do think there is a chance SpyBot is
hoggy. Can you easily disable it to see?

Do you really use that, the Task Scheduler? (Don't worry about "Tune-up
Application Start-- Walign", in there. And run Scandisk/Defrag on your
own.) If not, use it's menu to turn off it's start at boot. (You may
still use it occasionally by "START, Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, Scheduled Tasks", if you ever have a need to.). HOWEVER, it will
put itself back into the Startup Group, unless you remove...

every five minutes. It can be uninstalled in "Control Panel, Add/Remove

MDM is loaded with programs such as Office, and Microsoft Script
Debugger.
The fix is to prevent it from loading, by renaming the file, and
removing its reference in the startup group.

Rename MDM.EXE to MDM.EX_ or MDM.BAD, or something like that.
Look for any reference to MDM.EXE in the Startup folders:
C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
C:\Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
and in the registry run key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
and delete it.

Then delete all those fff___.tmp files.
Note that if you reinstall any of the programs that added MDM.EXE, you
may get it loaded back, and will have to disable it again.

Has anyone noted the continuous running of MDM.exe (Machine Debug Manager)?
That .exe is not on my win98 SE, which is not to say that it is not a valid
..exe but.......
