Default Cannot logon to Windows ME

I am asking this for my brother who hasn't been able to get on his computer
in months now. I use XP so am no help to him. Everytime he tries to boot to
the desktop, he gets a message saying that he needs a password. That's all
well and good IF he could remember it. He DID enter a password but now
cannot remember it. Is there a way to create a user key in ME without being
able to get to the desktop?

Tell your brother to try the following.

a) Boot to Win Me, click Cancel at the log on screen. This will make him
the default user. Browse to the Windows folder using Windows Explorer and
search for all files with a PWL extension. There will probably be just
one. Rename the PWL file with his user name to having OLD as its
extension rather than PWL.

b) Reboot and when presented with the password box either i) enter a
password and this time try and remember it, or, ii) enter no password and
then click OK (NOT cancel or escape). If he chooses to enter no password
he should never be asked for a password again.

Note that unlike NT based systems such as XP, the logon password in Win Me
is not for security but primarily rather to allow different users, where
there is more than one user, to customise their desktop and the like to
meet their individual preferences.

Regards,
