Windows 98 will not install on boot up
This is my first post here and I’m making this plea from a public
library the reasons for which will become apparent if you read my post. Please Help !!!!! and many thanks for looking. Windows 98se will not install on boot up. This is the first time this has ever happened and here is the backgound. Last night I was ‘cleaning’ the computer, eg removing cookies and emptying the cache using a program called clean sweep, which I have used for years with no problems. I then deleted 3 activeX items which had been downloaded from MSN. I presume these came from my daughters MSN Messenger. I did not clean any files in the registry. Just earlier in the evening I ran Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware and was clean. I went into the desktop and found that I could not open any icons by right clicking on them so I decided to shut down the computer and reboot. Oh dear… 8O …at start up the computer progressed to the Windows logo and the streaming part at the bottom of the screen. At the click which normally signals the monitor bursting into life I got a blank screen with a password dialogue box asking for my password – never had this in 5yrs. After putting in a random password I get the following Explorer dialogue box:- ‘This programme has performed an illegal operation’ when I click on the details button I get the following :- EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at 0177: 00401f31. Registers: EAX=00000000 cs=0177 EIP 00401f31 EFLGS=00010246 EBX 00000001 SS=017f ESP=0080feec EBP 0080FEF4 ECX =cc1625b10 DS017f ESI 00000000 FS =258f EDX=0080fec ES=017f EDI00000000 GS=0000 Bytes at CS: EIP 8b 08 50 ff 11 8b 45 08 50 8b 08 ff 51 08 8b 45 Stack dump: 00401 ee 0 0080fefc 0080ff34 00405cac 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001 00404436 00000000 0059fc0c 00000001 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 I put in my Win 98 start up disc and got the following :- CDR101: Not ready reading drive Z Abort, Retry, Fail. and could not go any further. I am able to get to Windows 98 Startup Menu using the F8 button at startup. So I need something get me on through the command prompt. Is my computer dead in the water :!: :?: Apologies in advance for any delay in getting back to as I am having to borrow a computer to gain access to the net. Thanks for looking and as always all suggestions gratefully welcomed safety24 -- Posted using the http://www.windowsforumz.com interface, at author's request Articles individually checked for conformance to usenet standards Topic URL: http://www.windowsforumz.com/Applica...ict549991.html Visit Topic URL to contact author (reg. req'd). I found this link within the site :- http://www.windowsforumz.com/Genera...pict254596.html and the chap had an identical problem and a very similar error message.Trouble is the advice to fix problem is quite technical. Can anybody simplify it for a beginner. I am able to get to Windows 98 Startup Menu using the F8 button at startup. So I need something get me on through the command prompt. Restored my PC’s registry to pre-clean up state. Many thanks for looking. safety24 |
